Curiosity Kills the cat

Just for you, because you asked so nice, but also, I want DBM to note that this isn't going out on egriz at large, or TV.

To myself, I say, "Self, those guys are good, god we need to win, I don't want to hear from anyone who is a Cat fan for another year that they won the one that counts." You look at the talent they have developed the last half dozen years or so and respect that they are a soldi group.

In the public, when the camera goes back on, then it is RTD, FTC, bobcats suck!

They honestly might be. I've heard some people say that they think Sac will contend for the title. Or they could be terrible. That's kind of my point, It's very hard to tell these days, at least until they actually play some games anyway.
Kind of my point to the original post.
Cats have sustained their winning for awhile now. Meanwhile, the likes of Sac State have yet to earn the benefit of the doubt.

There could be some moving parts there that make it very interesting. If their suit against the NCAA goes anywhere, that might change this for them. I honestly thought they would be allowed to move up and then expected that like when Sam Houston State moved up, they would redshirt a lot of guys to save their FBS eligibility. Then, how much buzz is going on around them being an independent next year. Seems like that could be distracting as well. I think they created a lot of things that can be disruptive as the season plays out, it has to be a lot of let down from thinking you're going to "big time" football to much more uncertainty.

I have a question regarding the Cats. Please be honest if possible.

Why is it, every year before the season starts, many of us write off msWho?

As much as it pains many of us, they've been damn good the last decade. Yet, every year, many GRIZ fans think they'll plummet and not be a conference title contender. Why is that?

If I take out my GRIZ Fandom, from an analytical point of view, it's difficult to HONESTLY not consider them among Big Sky elite and a national title contender. After all, they've been having great results for awhile now.

Do we not give them credit, just because they're our hated in state rival? Or do we honestly believe they're going to suddenly just fall off?

I'm not talking just this year, but the last several years. I get it, when a team has a few years of success. There's still a lot to proof. To me, they've more than proven themselves as a true Top 5 FCS program.

As for this season, I honestly feel they'll be a few notches below what they were last season. However, I still expect them to be a top 10 FCS team and make a strong playoff run.

The last decade, unfortunately they've had many of us eating crow. I know, I'm tired of crow. Hate them as much as we want, but does that hatred somewhat blind us?

Who honestly thinks theyll be worse than a Big Sky title contender this year? Based on long term on field results, I'll be surprised if they're not a conference title contender this year. Yes, I'd love to be wrong on this.

Thoughts, opinions, analysis?
Let's do the analysis for the last 10 years:

2014 - Griz 3rd, scats 4th
2015 - Griz 3rd, scats 9th
2016 - Griz 8th, scats 9th
2017 - Griz 6th, scats 7th
2018 - Griz 6th, scats 4th
2019 - Griz 3rd, scats 4th
2020 - Not counting
2021 - Griz 4th, scats 2nd
2022 - Griz 6th, scats 2nd
2023 - Griz 1st, scats 3rd
2024 - Griz 5th, scats 1st

Based on those results, the scats HAVEN'T been having great results for awhile now. For the last 4 years, yes. The last 10, no way. Griz average finish over the last 10 true seasons - 4/5. Scats - 4/5. So the Griz and scats have had similar results.

I think the scats will be good this year. Will they be great, doubful, but that remains to be seen. They lost a lot of talent from last year's squad, especially at one of the most important positions in football - QB. They also lost All-Big Sky Conference players Scottre Humphrey - 1st Team, Conner Moore - 1st Team, Rohan Jones - 1st Team, and Andrew Powdrell - 2nd Team to the transfer portal. Brody Grebe - Big Sky Defensive POY, Marcus Wehr - 1st Team ABSC, Cole Sain - 1st Team ABSC, Rylan Ortt - 1st Team ABSC, and Tommy Mellot - BS Offensive POY graduated and Brody, Marcus, and Tommy went to the NFL. You don't lose that level of talent in one year and replace it with the same level of talent. Where they finish in the BSC standings will come down to how well they replace the huge talent losses, who they play and when they play them, and how healthy they stay. Honestly, with all of the talent they lost off last year's squad, I'm extremely confused why most people are picking them to be as good again this year.

The cat's are certainly an unknown going into this season. On offense, they not only lose Mellott, but also Humphries! Nevertheless, the RB group is still strong. The WR's, as a group are probably above average. The QB group however is a question. There is talent, but the staff will have a lot of work to do, in adjusting the offensive scheme to the talent they have returning, as it appears their recent recruiting has been geared to complement Tommy Mellott. The OL unit is unquestionably the best unit on the offense as very possibly the entire team!

Despite the loss of Brode Greebe, the D line has a multitude of returning experience and talent. However replacing Greebe's presence and production is improbable. Given the 4-2-5 defensive scheme the cat's have been using, they should be fine with their LB crew. The big question will be the Secondary, particularly early, against Oregon and SDSU. I believe they lost 4 secondary starters from last year, to graduation and the portal. How quickly this unit gels will decide how this team finishes.

With Taco Dowler back on Special Teams, that unit should be solid.

At least that is how I see it. Given their overall strength of schedule, (difficult), I do not see the cat's being as good this year as they were last year!
Realistically, a great year for them will be 9-3, with 8-4 being more likely. Even 7-5 is a possibility, although I would not bet on that. I think 8-4 would be a good season.

A lot will be shown on Sep 6th when South Dakota State plays at MSU.
SDSU will have already hosted Sac State the week before.
Will SDSU start 0-2?
Will MSU start 0-2 since they play at Oregon Aug 30?
In three weeks we will know alot more!

They’re a good team. They were a great team with Mellott. They’ll be a good team without him. You don’t suddenly lose the Walter Payton Award winner at the most important position on a football team and not go a little backwards. They will have a good defense and can still run the ball. That combo is always a good one in football.
Nope. They take a major step back.

How come every year we say this is the Cats year but they always fold against quality teams whether it is Montana in Missoula or NDSU anywhere Brent Vigen has proven time and time again that he is a loser when the lights get brighter and the stage gets bigger. Idk why people always seem to think this year is going to be different but once we get to the game in Missoula it will be a massacre like all the other Vigen games in Missoula.

This one is simple. FCs is now watered down except for the Mo Valley and BSC. Even those conferences have plenty of weak teams. Can’ts will be top 10 this year and then lose their coach within 24 months, maybe as long as 36 months. Fan base will turn sour on Vegan. They had a great run with Choate and his recruits. Vegan isn’t the same recruiter and Choate had the advantage of a Griz program in absolute turmoil. Can’ts fans are used to winning and being competitive the last decade. It will sting to lose again. Many of their fans don’t realize that Anderson and Mellott were rare talents that come along once in a blue moon. Also Cruzado is gone and she probably left a precarious environment for the new president. There will be a microscope on behavior now. Something Vegan hasn’t done a good job of controlling with his coaches. Top 10 in FC’s isn’t saying much. Top 5 is very respectable. Cant’s should end the season at #6 or #7 unless their QB situation is an absolute disaster. Can their run game flourish without Mellott under center? Doubtful.

Choate is trash as a coach. His record isn’t even .500.

Choate had the benefit of Bob Stitt not taking the Cats game seriously and losing when the Griz should have dominated. That will not happen with Hauck in charge instead of Stitt.

If it wasn’t for Bob Stitt’s failures in the Brawl of the Wild Jeff Choate would have been fired after 2 seasons. His terrible Nevada teams going winless in conference play are also indicative of who he is outside of facing an unmotivated Stitt.
