CSU Game Thread

Cherry hits 2 ft's, bringing the Griz to within 4. CSU hits a 3 though... Cherry is back at the FT line, and hit them both. Griz down by 5 with a little over 3 mins left.

For getting clobbered on the boards, I am impressed that they are still in the game. It's a shame, though, that it seems the problems from last year are still problems. FT shooting and 3 Point shooting. Uggh.

Made a good run. But man, it just seems like the Griz struggle finishing. Cherry had a chance to tie with an open look at a 3. Good teams give themselves a chance to shoot important shots. Great teams bury them.

Take heart, though, I am assuming Selvig was, out, no? We were likely horribly outmanned down low and the Griz still nearly pulled out the win. I am encouraged despite the loss. They will get it together come conference time. Hopefully sooner.

So far the BSC is competitive but not getting the wins. Only Weber is looking good, but that's against Northern New Mexico. Hard to gauge that.

Nothern New Mexico is a bad team, its hard to gauge what Weber is like off of that game, but we did look pretty good, we made a school record 17 3 pointers

Our real test is gonna be next tuesday when we host Utah State

Some other BSC teams had respectable losses.

MSU lost by only 6 at Arizona State
ISU only lost by 4 to Oklahoma
EWU only lost by 8 to Gonzaga

Its Early, and CSU is a good team, I fully expect the Griz to come roaring back.

Gonzaga shot 51 free throws in the game. EWU shot 11.

:o

Geeez. I DVR'd this game, but I don't know if there's any point in watching it. I think I know all I need to with that stat.

Gonzaga pounded the ball inside all game and Eastern settled for taking jump shots. EWU is very athletic and shoots the 3 well.

Will have a ton more to say tomorrow (I was able to go to the game), but yeah, the Griz got killed on the boards. Couldn't box out Hornung to save their life, and it killed them at the end, he got a key offensive rebound with 35 seconds left. There was a switch and it left Cherry trying to box out Hornung on a miss and predictably Cherry did not win that rebound battle.

Crunch time linup was Cherry-Stockton-Jamar-Steward-Weisner.

They need a speedy recovery from Selvig!

While I hope they get Selvig back soon, the team needs to be able to function without him, too. I obviously didn't get to see the game, so it's hard to say how they really did, but it does seem that they are getting there. Rebounding needs to be focused on, obviously,

In case anyone is interested, here is my writeup of the game plus a good photo my wife snapped of Tinkle and the players in a huddle at a timeout!

Good write up Jon. Based on where the picture was taken, did you struggle seeing through/over Tinkle? I moved back a few rows in the second half to see better. I was not too far from you, by the looks of it.

You were right about Gregory and Henderson making an impact. In their time on the court did you see anything of note. I look for how players move without the ball, or look moving the ball around, in position defensively or not, etc. I thought Henderson should have looked to score more. He had a few opportunities had he been aware enough to take advantage of them. As for Gregory, I like the looks of his jumper, the one shot he did get . Both looked solid defensively.

What do you think of Weisner? I liked what I seen. I think he has a good future.

I was able to see pretty well thankfully... we started in the upper section but couldn't see with all of the people walking in front of us so we moved down. We were right on the aisle almost, about 5 rows from the back of the lower section. So we were high enough to not be obstructed at all, which was nice.

I did not notice a ton about Henderson and Gregory. Henderson I could see the athleticism, I was hoping to see him get a bit more game time to assess. Gregory, I agree, I liked his stroke. I was also watching him quite a bit in warmups and at halftime shooting around, very good form, the ball looked smooth coming out of his hands (and more often than not, swishing through the net). Certainly you could see the talent those guys have.

Weisner impressed me also, especially since he was really not in his proper position most of the game. It is tough to ask him to be a 5 man (with his thin frame) against guys like Greg Smith, Will Bell, etc. Guys that are more athletic and simply physically stronger than him, and so to that end I thought he played well. His three at the end of the first half was huge. Defensively, I didn't really noticed him being taken advantage of, which again I think is a positive with the size mismatch.

Also I thought was interesting... I asked Miles after the game if he changed his defensive gameplan at all once he knew Selvig was out, and he said no. He said it certainly made things easier for CSU, but he didn't change things at all. They had been practicing doubling down all week and he liked the look, so he continued it even with Selvig out. He said going in he thought the two biggest threats for the Griz were going to be Cherry and Selvig, so the fact that they only had to face one of them certainly made things easier.
