Griz had a pretty decent OOC schedule this season. They can't go on the road for all their games and some of the bigger schools won't go to Missoula. Props to Few for scheduling the Griz when he has a line waiting to get on the playlist.

Yeah, I hear that. But UM is already going on the road for the second CSF game. Seems like we could've scheduled a middle of the pack Pac-10 team instead. Maybe Cal? OSU? I don't know, it just seems like a wasted date.
They get this out of the way this year (when we're coming off a stretch playing top 20 teams) and it doesn't use up a spot on the usual cal trip next year. However, I would like to see the griz play some mid-level teams from major conferences. We probably would've beat oregon state this year but it's not really on that trip.

No way is the OSU Coach going to schedule UM this year when he had a mass exodus, plus the fact he is still pissed about McGillis quitting to come home and play for the Griz. He almost didn't give Jack his release.
Yeah, probably not gonna happen but we need to find a few middle rung teams who are willing to schedule a 2 for 1 or something.

Den, I see what you mean about getting it out of the way. But my point is: The griz only have one chance to make the dance this year: win the BSC tourney.

If we had a crazy tough OOC schedule, we would still have the same chance at winning the BSC tourney even if we lost all the OOC games since conf. records are all that factors into it. But if we actually pulled off a couple upsets in OOC, we may not have to win the BSC tourney to make the Dance.

It just seems like UM would have nothing to lose and everything to gain by maing its OOC schedule a difficult as possible. This would be a page out of GU's playbook ten years ago, and, at that point, UM and GU were pretty much equal.

More middle rung teams would have been nice this year..and since
next year I think we will be better..It would be great for next year.

I think Air Force was a nice match up..you watch they will be good
this year, and they held up good in the first half against the cougs.

I hate to jinx things but I dont think the big sky has much to challenge
the Griz this year. Portland State beat Portland tonight but got
beat by of all folks..Colorado State in Alaska.

It might be FUN to rack up a bunch of wins though..I know it is
early to say it..but I love to see those 20 plus win seasons. I think
that is possible this year !

That does make sense. The counter, although I don't really fully agree with either side, is that a potential blowout loss (or any loss) could rattle the players heading into conference play, the only season that matters. They have to learn to win over decent or below average teams to get a real sense of confidence. A few wins should do this and one win over CSF isn't going to make our season but it was a trip we had to make and it's a reasonably challenging game on the road. I wouldn't be surprised, going forward, to see the Griz continue to increase the level of their OOC. Last year, we played almost no one challenging. Jumping to three tough teams in a month and a half may have been a bit much too soon.

My opinion: I'm content with the schedule this year although I do see your point. If they settle for this next year and don't continue to progress I will be upset, especially with the 08-09 team's great talent pool. Possibly adding on one more top 25 team and another top 60 team would make for a great schedule next year.

cda ...i agree with you on this one
if the Griz were 25 and 4 (or what ever the total is)...we still might not make the dance unless we win the tourney, and anything can happen in one game

I wouldn't say that. On the road in hoops is tough, especially the 2nd game when traveling the BSC. Try playing Sac and NAU on the road the same weekend. It sucks big time. At msu is never easy, in fact, there are no gimmees.

I think what most hoops fans want to see is the men dominating similar to what the LG did this past season. However, it is worth noting that they lost in the conference tournament.

Not taking away from any LG accomplishments, but the womens side of the BSC is not even close to the same level of competition as the mens. The LG have such a lopsided conference record it is laughable to suggest the men would ever dominate like the LG do.

That is definitely the drawback to it. Psychological things...

Baby steps, and hopefully there will be three ranked teams in the Inland Northwest in about five years.

I really think fans compare the two and want to see the same, whether justified or not. Other programs fans may look at: Griz football and Zag basketball. It can't be that unreasonable to wish their above average team could dominate the rest. It is unfair, but I don't think it's entirely impossible. Very very hard, but not impossible.

Which is about the case in point. Granted, 'CDAGRIZ' does put forth a valid arguement for SOS; good for Gonzaga with the history of their program these days. But really, the latest 'Sporting News' projects nine teams out of the 'Big East' Conference making it to the NCAA Tournament. That's out of sixteen teams. Considering the ACC and the SEC, PAC-10, etc., that doesn't leave much room for an at-large invite out of the Big Sky Conference; still, one main chance only, win the BSC Tournament. Otherwise...NIT?

Win that and I guess you can say you're the sixty-sixth best team then. I guess that's putting a positive spin on things. Get to play the final game in Madison Square Garden as well; geez, who wouldn't like that?

Well, I thought I would post today's RPI before tonight's game against CS Fullerton. This will probably be the highest that the Griz will ever see their RPI. CS Fullerton's opponents' schedule will pull the Griz down tonight, win or lose. And from there it will just keep falling.

But let's enjoy today!

Griz RPI: 19 (Yes, 19) :thumb:
Griz SOS: 28

It's too early to take these numbers seriously, but it's still pretty cool and shows that the Griz have done pretty darn well against one of the tougher schedules 7 games into the season.

As long as the Griz take care of business OOC, and then don't lose any home conference games - they could be on par with that 2006 team that went 24-6 with an RPI of 60.

Wow. Well, all you can say is we just have to win the games that are laid out in front of us. every game the rest of the year seems very winnable. Especially those left on the OOC schedule. I think the road cali games will be tough, but after that it's not too bad.
