Den, I see what you mean about getting it out of the way. But my point is: The griz only have one chance to make the dance this year: win the BSC tourney.
If we had a crazy tough OOC schedule, we would still have the same chance at winning the BSC tourney even if we lost all the OOC games since conf. records are all that factors into it. But if we actually pulled off a couple upsets in OOC, we may not have to win the BSC tourney to make the Dance.
It just seems like UM would have nothing to lose and everything to gain by maing its OOC schedule a difficult as possible. This would be a page out of GU's playbook ten years ago, and, at that point, UM and GU were pretty much equal.
That does make sense. The counter, although I don't really fully agree with either side, is that a potential blowout loss (or any loss) could rattle the players heading into conference play, the only season that matters. They have to learn to win over decent or below average teams to get a real sense of confidence. A few wins should do this and one win over CSF isn't going to make our season but it was a trip we had to make and it's a reasonably challenging game on the road. I wouldn't be surprised, going forward, to see the Griz continue to increase the level of their OOC. Last year, we played almost no one challenging. Jumping to three tough teams in a month and a half may have been a bit much too soon.
My opinion: I'm content with the schedule this year although I do see your point. If they settle for this next year and don't continue to progress I will be upset, especially with the 08-09 team's great talent pool. Possibly adding on one more top 25 team and another top 60 team would make for a great schedule next year.
