First off, let me apologize to those I have offended on here, Mr.Titlest in particular. Anyone "waisting" their precious time on this board is obviously a true fan & no bandwagoner, so I may be preaching to the choir. Unfortunately I've only been inspired to post when I'm pissed, & I'm usually not the most pleasant when in that state of mind. I'm 42 yrs old, & moved here in 1992. As a sports junkie, with football being king, I came here at the perfect time to witness & be a part of something special. Coming from a big city, I was skeptical & standoffish at 1st when it came to 1AA football, now FCS. After my 1st game it was obvious to me that this was good football being played here, by both the Griz & the opposition. What truly sucked me in was the passion of the crowd & the way they seemed to genuinely care about the team & the outcome of the game. I spent many a Saturday sauced in my NEZ seats ruining my voice for the week. When my voice went midway through the 3rd quarter I used my feet & hands by stomping on the benches & clapping. I've witnessed many games the past few decades where the crowd played an integral part in the outcome of the game, especially when the two teams were fairly even talent-wise. In my opinion we used to have at least a touchdown edge, maybe double digits, due to our homefield advantage-especially since few players on the opposition ever had the opportunity to play in that atmosphere. How many times have we seen the opponents backed up against the NEZ, deafened by the crowd, commit false start after false start, punt from their endzone, we score with a short field, game over? When we're fortunate enough to host playoff games & the elements are in play, the fervor of the crowd & the weather are often enough to squash the opposing team almost immediately-I've witnessed it, participated in it, felt it. You know it just like I do. Does it need to be the playoffs to capture that fervor that used to be prevalent week in & week out? The stadium is a lot nicer now with a lot more seats in it, but someone let the air out. It is full of newbie fans riding our coattails who really don't get it. They're their for the party. But it's not a fun party when we're losing, is it? Anyone telling someone to sit or be quiet while the other team has the ball simply doesn't get it & doesn't understand the dynamics of football, & quite frankly should be at home watching from their recliner. No offense, though I'm sure none of them are reading this. Football, more than any other sport, is affected by what goes on in the stands. Every fan in every great venue around the nation understands this. Yes the players need to execute, & yes the coaches need to put the players in a position to succeed, but the crowd matters.....big time. The end of the 1st half & beginning of the 2nd are often key moments of the game, take last week for example-the fans need to be in their seats, not rushing for their socializing. Another factor is any potential recruit that sees that crazy crowd & environment wants to be a part of it, it helps keep the machine rolling. Blah Blah Blah! That's my rant, though I could go on. I'm out!

Had to be done..dedicated to all the fans not in their seats at the start of the 3rd quarter because they were busy with tailgating.

...it iz impossible to ignore the graying of griz nation...
...from the boom crew/the nez and down both sidelinez...
...a direct reflection of american society in thiz day and age...

... 8-) ...

And it will continue to grey with the price of tickets these days. Not a lot of young families can shell out 1000 bucks to have their family attend them. Too bad. It would cost me nearly 1300 bucks to get season tickets for my family. And that just getting in. Not getting there.

It's not "socializing" that brings people out of the stadium, it's alcohol. People can socialize in the stadium.

The answer is that people either need to make drinking less of a priority, or UM needs to sell alcohol in the stadium.

And yeah, the aging of the general population is right on point as well. Old people just don't get quite as rowdy. Although there are a few who hold up their end of the deal!

Not that I necessarily disagree with the point the OP is making but the logical conclusion is that the Griz would be better off with only passionate fans even if it was fewer. That I disagree with. Like it or not, it is at least partly a numbers (read: $$$) game. There is no way the Griz would be better off with only 15K raving fans instead of the 15K plus 10K seat fillers.

My 80 year old mother, life-time Montanan, has braved the cold of every game since the mid-80's (including the App State game) to fill her seat. She is not as loud as she used to be -- but really she was never really loud. And since she can't stand for long periods of times, she needs the people in front of her to sit except of course for the big plays and intense situations. Would the Griz be better off without her? Maybe in some warped twilight zone but they certainly would not be better off without her money. How do you solve this problem? I haven't a clue but fewer people in the stadium ain't it.

My 81 year old father and 76 year old stepmom are in the exact same boat. And they're NEZ'ers....have had the same two seats for over 10 years. When I was in town for the Liberty game we got a block of 14 tickets at the very top of the new east side addition, about the 40 yard line--GREAT SEATS, BTW....my dad's comment was "these seats have backs, and at we don't have people here standing up in front of us."   I didn't have the heart to say anything....but I think he may be ready to relocate...I'm going to try and get him to NOT give up the NEZ seats.... 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

Complex problem with numerous reasons/excuses.

Off season antics have surrounded the program with negativity.
The economy in zoo town and western Montana sucks - tickets are a luxury
The team is sputtering and fair weather fans are enjoying the fair weather.
Griz fans have been spoiled and have taken winning for granted
Halftime and drinking is now more important than supporting the team
The seats are too hard and everyones ass hurts by third quarter.
Monte has become annoying
Smoke hurts peoples eyes.
The music doesn't sound good because the stadiums acoustics are bad
The Griz uniforms are lame
The Bobcats are stealing confused fans from the middle of the state
Old people in the stands are constantly farting and they smell bad. Who wants to sit by that?
The lines to the restrooms are too long.
We don't have sky divers anymore.
People are distracted because we have lights and no night games

Did I miss anything?

Sounds a lot like Rome when it fell ... except for the murders :)
