Well said, very well said.

Griz should dedicate the game to him. Derek is everything this program wants and needs

Very proud of Derek, what an incredible accomplishment.

Obviously I'm bummed he'll miss his final Griz-cat game, but this obviously takes priority.

This is a life changing moment for him that, if he is accepted, will open more doors than most of us can even dream of. I would be willing to bet that his coaches and teammates are all behind him completely. Wish we had a story like this every day about the Griz!

Not to derail the Ev/PR verbal sparring match, before it ends up being a fight down at the Mo Club......my money would be on Everett, but what do I know. I never played the game.

Congrats to him. I saw this get tweeted the other day by Colter. Very happy to have this young man representing the state of MT.

A large part of the importance of the football program is representation, culture, and promotion of the school.

I'm sorry, but interviewing for a Rhodes Scholarship goes far beyond in providing value to the U than just playing football.

not only agree, I wish we had this predicament every year at the u of Montana, what an honor,,,,,football games come and go, the game of life is the real deal.......

Congratulations to Derek, tremendous honor and opportunity. Hope he gets to merry old England and becomes a world class scientist and part time rugby player.

A great honor and a great recruiting tool. There is some serious ammo when you go after a high academic kid! The coaches can hold up the example of Derek to the kid and the parents and say "look, you can come to Montana and be both a stud football player and a top student". This will open doors for our recruiters.

Congratulations to Crittenden........I cannot think of a bigger honor or award this this one. I see no reason why he is not selected. Might as well retired the 37 legacy. No way any 37 can take it to a higher level off the field. He has set the bar for this legacy and academics for GRIZ football players.

As we all know there are points in our lives that we have decisions to make and choices that are very difficult affecting not only ourselves but others, and unfortunately often this involves close others like family and teammates. Given the stellar character demonstrated by this extraordinary young man I have no doubt he has weighed all the factors involved in this situation and made the decision based upon his priorities and values that he has acquired throughout his young lifetime. Clearly he has shown the integrity of his makeup and decided what is best for his future---which is what anyone else would do given the situation. I am immensely proud to have Derek Crittenden representing the University of Montana and the State of Montana in this capacity that he has prepared for so diligently, on the field, off the field, and in the community.

Well said. Impressive man who should be the example of being a student athlete, not only at UM but across the nation.

This is fantastic! Congrats DC! This reminds me of 5 or so years ago that a player from Kansas State and another time Florida State I believe missed a game and if they got the Scholarship would've missed the next season because they were over the pond for school. Can't remember details, but just remember that conversation by the announcers during their games.

Very cool honor, congrats to him and the university. If he is awarded, he would be the first one since 1991?
