Copy the Scats?

Should we copy what the Scats are doing? I did some research.
Last year MSU was 10-1 in the reg season, losing only to FBS Oregon State, demolished the Griz in the Brawl and made it all the way to the Championship game.
Saturday they went to SDSU and barely lost.
All of this with a team that relied mostly on running the ball.
In the brawl they rushed for 439 yds on 66 atts. Passing was 10 atts for just 122 yds
For all of 2022 they had 4558 yds rushing vs 2576 passing
Saturday they had 213 yds on 48 atts running the ball vs. 87 yds on 15 atts passing.
On the GFP it was said that in order to keep up with good passing teams like Idaho we would have to able to pass the ball. With our experienced O-Line and especially our wealth of RBs and a talented running QB I see no reason why we can’t beat the scats at their own game – and other teams too.
Sure you have to be able to occasionally pass, but if the opponents have to stack the box to stop your running game it opens the pass for players like Bergen to only have to beat 1 guy and he is gone. It controls TOP and keeps your D fresh.
I know it sounds like heresy but I would be more than happy to see the Griz beat the Scats at their own game and be relevant in the playoffs this year. I believe we can.

I think we’re trying to do something similar. Whatever we do I’d at least like an identity from year to year. Say what you want about Phlu and Stitt but at least we knew what to expect and what we were going to be.

Maybe after 3-4 games we’ll know but right now we have no clue. All we really know is that we have a bunch of really good backs. And a QB who runs really well.

If we have to run the ball 50-60 times each game in order to win, I don't care whose offense it copies. Do it and win. And it's not like the Bobcats invented the running game or are the only ones doing it, for crying out loud.

That being said, if we're going to run the ball 50-60 times a game, I sure hope we can average more than 4.4 yards per carry like we did against a bottom of the pile squad like Utah Tech.

I don’t want to copy them…. I want to be able score from the one yard line……i do think we can run but also need to be using our te’s

Who was it that said, "When passing the ball, three things can happen, and two of them are bad." Griz have been overly reliant on the pass, with three and out being all too common. This new look is a breath of fresh air. Opponents have been all too aware of what we will do. With the talent we have at running back, it would be stupidity not to use it to the max, opening the door for whomever turns out to be our next Mariani. This should be a high scoring ball control team. :thumb:

Is it me or in the past two games has there not been a jet sweep by the Griz?
Not sure.
Would like to see that out of a pro set with McDowell

You forget that when you find yourself down in the second half against a good team, you need to be able to move the ball through the air to win. Your ground and pound offense is neutralized in that situation, ask MSDUI.

Interesting thought; however, a small correction to your notes, THE CATS did not make it to the championship game last year. (Two years ago yes, not last year)
The cats fell behind in the first half of the semi final against SDSU and had no passing game to try and catch up.

We had a running QB last year and he got beat up and mostly played hurt.

Tommy gets beat up and plays hurt regularly too, and is possibly one, maybe two, concussions away from needing a permanent drool cup. Chambers can take a better pounding but is worse than Adrian Dantley once the ball is hiked to him--doesn't know the meaning of the word "handoff".

Bobby splitting QB time between a passer and a runner is a better solution in the long run, and I hope the Griz get that interchange down to a smooth groove.

Thanks for the correction.
