Connor Strahm

I thought Connor was a little under-utilized his Sophomore year. He's a fierce competitor, and too much time on the sidelines caused him to vent excessively when he was on the field.

Wow, I've read a lot of egregious things on e-griz but this has me really shaking my head. So do third string tennis players, or golfers or gymnasts get to vent excessively and leave sportsmanship in the dust because they are under utilized? So it's ok to aim that overhead at your opponents face or crotch because your not getting the playing time you think you deserve? What about a debater who doesn't make the traveling team? Is it ok to vent excessively and kick the crap out of someone ahead of him/her. This type of excuse making for any student athlete or participant in any extracurricular activity is unacceptable and exactly the type of thing that takes support away from a football program. It is no different than overlooking sexual assault because after all, he/she is going to bring us a championship ring. Nipping this type of behavior in the bud, not condoning it, needs to be a priority for every coaching staff. I'm hoping that psychiatry is not Brewski's chosen profession.

I think the vast majority of griz fans are with AZ on this! Strahm is an excellent middle LB and had a little growing up to do. But I for one will give him benefit of the doubt and expect great things from him this coming season! :thumb:

My earlier post said absolutely nothing about Strahm. Possibly I overreacted a little to Brewski's post and I understand that sometimes we all word things in a way that can offend where a more tactful post goes unchallenged. That said I have zero tolerance for athletes being judged by different standards of behavior than anyone else or unsportsmanlike behavior be given a pass by the fans because they really want to see a better won/loss record. The Griz were #3 (worst) in both number of penalties and penalty yardage last year and they certainly were not all on Strahm. No way to know whether that cost them a win or playoff spot but it doesn't help and needs to be cleaned up. If players aren't getting the playing time they think they deserve they can vent by going to the weight room or employ other more constructive methods.

I don't even respond to AZ anymore nor do I care one way or another about his opinions.

Dudes a beast. Who gives a shit about 15 yards once every 4 games a year. He's an enforcer and a bully out there. The benefits of his style of play far and away outweigh the downsides.

I hope we've got 5 more Strahms in the making at LB.
You must have missed the MSU game. There were no "benefits of his style of play."

He provided a benefit to Chris Murray... acted as a pillow/cushion to break Murray's fall. The only things that hit the ground for Murray were his two feet and a hand. I would imagine Strahm wants to erase this play from his memory and stick Murray in 2018. Strahm is a good player, and plays hard/nasty most of the time.

Different players are going to react to situations differently. Strahm brings a lot of "enthusiasm" and fire. I'd rather have guys like that than ones that will stoically walk to the sideline with their heads down when something doesn't go our way. Sometimes a big play, or even a penalty, can bring a surge to the sideline and improve body language and energy. In my opinion, that's a benefit that you gain from a 15 yard penalty.

But it's a team of 100 guys. You need bullies mixed in with the band geeks. If you don't have an enforcer with an attitude then the roster gets a little vanilla. (No offense intended - I was in the band in HS).

Just my humble opinion.

Nice try. Your post in which you "said absolutely nothing about Strahm" was in DIRECT response to a post about Strahm. I mean Christ, at least OWN your opinion no matter how retarded it might be. And nice job casually changing the argument to "penalty yardage" instead of your personal hardon for Connor Strahm. Believe me, nobody is fooled. I mean, no shit, Sherlock: There's not a single Griz fan who wouldn't like to see fewer penalties, so yeah, real reach there on that totally unrelated topic.

You're a regular Albert fucking Einstein...

This is really the dominant thread that comes out of the second practice, discussion of whether a guy who didn't play is or isn't too aggressive. I thought the board's discussion might center around how comfortable Reese looked against a defense that gave him a lot of looks. Or about a defense that used a lot of different looks.

Yeah, defense. Why do the CB's never turn to look at the ball, they try to play for a strip after the WR catches the ball. Not only does it look ineffective but facing guarding calls have to be coming.

You new here?

Connor's personal foul when he reached over and tapped the MSU lineman was a very key play in the game.

Wasn't that Kidder? The play by play shows it was if this is the play you are thinking of:

4th and 2 at UM32 PENALTY MSU false start (Mitch Brott) 5 yards to the UM37, PENALTY UM personal foul (Caleb Kidder) 15 yards to the UM22, 1ST DOWN MSU, NO PLAY.

I took a quick look through the play by play of all games last year and only found two instances where Strahm had a penalty called on him. One was an illegal block after an interception and the other was a roughing the passer (during the ISU game).

Here are all 86 penalties called on the Griz last year (7 were declined).

Some of the holding and offsides penalties don't have names attached to them in the play by play, but all of the personal fouls, unsportsmanlike conduct, and roughing the passers did.

I would suggest patience. This thread, like most, has the potential to morph into a new uniform thread, more "Montana" recruits thread or even a move-up thread. :thumb:

Add in some over the top verbosity and who knows a POTY could emerge....

The move-up threads were consistent with a growing University. Pretty quiet these days.

Interesting. Thanks for doing the research, Potomac. What you've proven is that Strahm's supposed "dirty play" and "multiple personal fouls" and "costing us games" is a myth the likes of John Nguyen's mythical fumbling problem.

Here is my take on this whole thing. REMEMBER, I am a very unbiased, level headed person that has no real emotions on this.

1) Connor Strahm is not from Montana, and that is why he is personal fouling so much maybe. Montana kids don't personal foul maybe, or sell Xanax maybe. Montana kids break into mayors houses, or drink beer in someones unfinished garage. You should only recruit Montana kids, and I am shocked you don't have more, or less, maybe

2) Your uniforms make it real easy for your players to personal foul, if you do. You should look into changing uniforms to a less personal foul type uniform. Maybe Nike can get you new ones that make the refs think the other team is personal fouling you? Talk to Sac State about this, they seem to be real "Slick" (see what I did there?)

3) I don't think this has anything to do with player intensity, but more to do with Moving up to FBS. Your players are all to intense for this level of play, and would be more suited to playing against other teams that are more intense. Moving up would be good, or bad, maybe.

4) Marketing is key to not personal fouling (if you do). You should look at marketing more better. Maybe a picture of a girl running on a hill that says "SEE!!! She is not being personal fouled at all right now" It works on many levels.
