Congratulations Shannon - go Griz

Wow, talk about keeping it all in the family. Help me with this - Did Eric and Debbie Hays have 3 daughters? Which one played at Idaho State for a year or two? Where did Kelly coach?

For those who don't know Eric Hays, he was a Jud Heathcote recruit who followed Jud from WSU after Eric's freshman year back in the mid 70s. Eric was Mr. Hustle for the Griz and scored (I think) 32 points in the NCAA tournament game the Griz lost to UCLA by 3 points in the next to last year of John Wooden's coaching.

Eric's son is the boy's coach at Hellgate.

He has four daughters, two sets of twins. Molly played at Idaho State, then I think she went to UCLA and rowed. Kelly didn't coach, she's a psychologist. Shannon made a pretty funny joke about it at the introductory press conference:
"Mike Petrino, who I am planning on hiring, he was at the University of Wyoming and most recently at Colorado, he is coming on board with a lot of great ideas. I think I got a real two-for-one there, his wife is a psychologist so I’m going to be able to use her as well. I’m not sure who I will spend more time with."

2001 article in the Billings Gazette has Kelly coaching softball for one year at Bozeman High before resigning to return to school.

Ok, we now have 3 Montanans on the staff. Let's broaden the recruiting with the remaining coaches. And, let's not compare Ken Bone's experience with that of Mike Petrino. Petrino is still working his way up the coaching ladder - his experience is that he is has been the video guy at two colleges. No doubt he is ready for a bigger challenge but I would be more comfortable with Shannon filling those other two slots with people who have had college coaching experience and who can broaden the recruiting geographical base. If this goes as usual, we won't hear for several more weeks. My correction - I think Petrino has been the video guy at Wyoming - it seems that he was hired to do the same thing at Colorado and the head coach was fired before the next season began so he was out of a job there. Anyone know what he has done for the last year? Perhaps I am wrong on this, but Colorado didn't list him on the staff when he got the job here.

There is only one more opening on the LGriz to fill. Sonya Rogers Stokken will remain. Petrino may not have a lot of experience in Div 1 women's basketball, but he was highly regarded as a boys high school coach in Oregon. That experience should be helpful to Shannon.

Congrats Shannon! No one more deserving or prepared for this! I may be dating myself here, but I'd like to think your role as my nanny back in your playing days (Suffice to say I was a big hit every time she picked me up from school. Lol) trained ya for watching over young hooligans. Cannot wait to see where you take the program!!!

Any word on what Trish Duce is going to be doing. Noticed that she is not on Shannon's coaching staff?

Before Robin announced his retirement (I think), she moved across campus to a tech position - which she had been doing also in the Athletic Department. Great for her to have this new opportunity and not have to leave campus.

Another fan of Shannon. I like her and her husband. He is a pretty darn good artist and I think a good track man.
I expect her to do a very good job and I'm thinking she wants to recruit kids that are a jump ahead of our girls, ones that Robin has done such a great job with. I am guessing what she will do, perhaps she wants to get 3 or 4 super players from any area she can.
In any event I'm behind her 100%. Go Griz!
