Congrats Ryan Divish: Go Mariners! Go Griz!

A tiny bit of context here: I'm a UM English/Journalism grad (class of 73) who stumbled onto a common connection a few years back when searching for info on a promising high school basketball recruit from Gig Harbor, WA (Matthias Ward) who had just signed with the Griz.

I contacted a young sports writer for the Tacoma News Trib (TNT), Ryan Divish, who provided me good links on M Ward... and also mentioned that he was a UM Grad and an avid Griz fan. We've communicated a bit off n' on regarding the Griz over the years since.

Well, congrats are due to Ryan, who was today named as the new Seattle Times beat writer covering the Seattle Mariners! Ryan, a native of Havre, is well deserving, if you've read his excellent coverage of the Mariners for the TNT, you'll agree, I'm sure.

There's a story-announcement in today's SeattleTimes (see link below) with a welcoming quote from longtime Seattle Times sportswriter/columnist Larry Stone. Check this out: "Ryan is the perfect choice to take over our Mariners coverage," Stone said. "He has a passion for baseball, an intimate knowledge of the beat, and most important, a connection already established with fans. But those who aren't yet familiar wit Divish are in for a treat. Just be prepared for a lot of tweets about his beloved Montana Grizzlies sprinkled in with the Mariner news." (BF added by me)

Those of you who know Divish know about his Havre roots. But there's a good bit of bio info that details his journey from Havre to Seattle. Once again Ryan, a hearty Congratulations!

Here's the link to the announcement in today's Seattle Times:

Congrats to Ryan!!! He's a great writer. Can't wait to read him daily in the Times.

And FWIW, he used to post fairly regularly on eGriz as well. Hope he still at least reads us!

I know this idiot Divish. He's a HACK!!!

Completely kidding, Ryan is one of my oldest/closest friends, and is a big reason why I'm in the business today. It's a well-deserved move up the chain for him. He's a very respected baseball writer, and I hope the Times appreciates him while they have him because I think this isn't his last stop. He's that good.

Ryan is a still an avid Griz fan. He watches every game, via the web, at a sports bar or however else he can see them in the Seattle area. He was able to attend the Eastern Washington game, though I told him afterwards, I'm never going to an EWU game with him again, because we also met in Cheney last year, so I've declared him a Griz jinx, at least against the Eags.

Kudos to Mr. Divish. I have listened to him in his guest appearances on sports talk radio many times here in Greater Seattle and he always impresses me with his depth and breadth of baseball knowledge (and other sports) and his real professionalism. Plugs the Griz as well every now and then.

Awesome hire Times! :thumb:
