Confusion about "The U"

It is one thing to purposely refer to the University of Miami as "The U" and another thing completely to assume that anyone who mentions "The U" is necessarily talking about it, especially on a Montana football board. Correcting someone for referring to the University of Montana as "the U" on eGriz is absurd.

There was a movie back in the 70's called The Sting so now it is only proper to assume that anyone who refers to "the sting" must be referring to it? Silly. This is undoubtedly one of the dumbest threads ever on eGriz and I did my part to perpetuate it. I am going to go put my hat on and sit in the corner.

f.....................U

Nope, that is Furman

Funny! Ive been tempted to become a Furman fan so I can walk around with a sweatshirt on that says FU.

In Vancouver, BC, you see a lot of people with sweatshirts that say "SFU"

Just to add to this absurd discussion:

- Chicago, IL = "The U" is known as WCIU TV
- theU.com is not affiliated with any college or university
- Utah = "The U" is known as the University of Utah
- Michigan = "The U" is known as the University of Michigan
- Minnesota = "The U" is known as the University of Minnesota
- San Antonio, TX = "The U" is known as University United Methodist Church

The U:

As in Mizzu?

I have read many many threads over the years here on egriz that make a person dumber for having spent the time doing so, this thread is one of those threads.....

Carry on....

Now that I'm thinking about it why do we call ourselves UM. Everywhere else that's Michigan. So confusing!? :?

True. Depending on where you are in the country I've heard Minnesota, Michigan, Miami, and Missouri all been referred to as UM. I just say University of Montana when I'm in other parts of the world.
another egriz instant classic.

the thread....not your post....

You're welcome :)

TM is the best we've got.

One thing I think I've figured out is that nobody is more interested in playing the best player than the coaches. Their livelihood and professional reputation depend on it. They see the players practice each day and carefully track their effectiveness. If there was a better quarterback than TM on the roster, there is no doubt in my mind he'd be in the game.

The odd part of this debate is that the real question that might be asked is why there seems to be a lack of depth at the quarterback position?

Excellent point/question. The U should not be in that position, regardless of the JJ situation.

Wait...why are you talking about Miami on a Montana board?

Boy I tell ya Quarterback situations can be stickier than a coon in caught in a beehive. At the "U" we had Vinny T who was not a fan of ol Bernie. But he waited until it was his time because he had a upperclassmen in front, but he still wanted to be out there, but he would have struggled as freshmen do. Jim would get his chance later. Sometimes as in the case of the Griz you are not afforded such luxuries.

The "U" is the University of Minnesota, if you've ever spent time in or near Minnesota.

I have never heard Miami referred to as the U. Learn something everyday.

In Montana, I think most people would know one is talking about the University of Montana if one referred to the U.
Anyone who hasn't heard Miami called the U has not watched the player introductions in the NFL, hasn't watched sports center, and hasn't watched college football for the last 25 years.

Looks like you watch too much tv. You need to get out in the world a bit more. Ha-ha.
One of the best most logical posts I've seen.
The U is Montana to anyone in the state. The boy who claims to be a student that has never heard that cannot possibly be serious.

This has been a weird thread. I am a Montana alum, and I frequently refer to the university (not the football team) as "the U" and so do many of my friends. I teach part-time for another university and attend a third. I refer to them both as "the U" from time-to-time, and my students and faculty always know who I'm talking about. In nearly every university town I've ever been in, at least some people call the local university the U and everybody knows what they're talking about. I have never referred to the University of Miami as "the U" (or in any other way.)

In Washington "The U" is UW

In Michigan "The U" is UM

No one, except for hardcore football junkies, affiliate the term "The U" with Miami.

I am a Colorado native and I live 40 minutes from Boulder. Never in my 34 years of existence have I heard anyone call CU, "The U." Never.

Maybe they were confused about which U the game was at. :o :? :)

Wow, with the overwhelming fan support shown in this photo,
that "U" should probably ask "Y" bother fielding a team at all?
:ugeek:

Never is a long time...

Sorry, I have never lived there, so, I am no expert on it.

Hmmm...according to the first video, perhaps the people BigSkyBears heard were too drunk or stoned to understand that they were saying "the U"
