Confusion about "The U"

So the assertion is the "average person" means the University of Miami when referring to "the U". That would mean that if someone were able to search every website for any reference to "the U" that around 50% (i.e. average) would be referring to the University of Miami. Really? If you believe that then you will also believe that I have some Missoula lake front property I will sell you fer a very reasonable price. If you do a Google search for "Lake Missoula" then you'll find it too.

I just assume that several posters are just plain stupid. This is an University of Montana Grizzlies Forum, and would think if someones references "the U" while talking about Griz football, it would naturally make sense that said person means "The University of Montana". But that could just be me. :thumb:

In a sense their assertion is right. To the "average" person living in Miami, the "U" might mean Univ. of Miami.

It is only among those few "average" folks not living in south Florida, that the "U" might mean something else.

God forbid we start discussing just who the hell "U of M" may be. It might crash the system. So don't bring it up.

The "U" is the University of Minnesota, if you've ever spent time in or near Minnesota.

I have never heard Miami referred to as the U. Learn something everyday.

In Montana, I think most people would know one is talking about the University of Montana if one referred to the U.
Anyone who hasn't heard Miami called the U has not watched the player introductions in the NFL, hasn't watched sports center, and hasn't watched college football for the last 25 years.

Looks like you watch too much tv. You need to get out in the world a bit more. Ha-ha.
One of the best most logical posts I've seen.
The U is Montana to anyone in the state. The boy who claims to be a student that has never heard that cannot possibly be serious.

That is true. Nice work. :thumb:

Now that I'm thinking about it why do we call ourselves UM. Everywhere else that's Michigan. So confusing!? :?

True. Depending on where you are in the country I've heard Minnesota, Michigan, Miami, and Missouri all been referred to as UM. I just say University of Montana when I'm in other parts of the world.
