three or four reporters asking questions of all big sky coaches, one at a time, monitored by a rep from the big sky office. coaches would ask, "can you hear me? is it working?" the reporters didn't have many questions. once the rep said, "okay, we have time for two more questions." dead silence. "okay, thanks coach." mix apathy with a podunk conference, and this is what you get.
still, a couple of conclusions.
first, the conference is going to be way tougher than last year. idaho state, portland state and weber state have all added big men, and all three of those coaches feel they're way ahead of where they were at this time last year.
second, we could be entering the era in college basketball of the "mighty mites." nate robinson at udub proved he was a player, and so did tajuan porter at oregon during their ncaa run last year. the big sky will be introducing two this year: jeremiah dominguez, 5'6", at portland state, and kellen mccoy, same size, at weber state. the latter scored 16 in his debut last week in a tournament in canada, and both coaches rave about these kids. the griz passed on the chance to recruit a kid who is an absoloute dynamo, junior russell, teammate at santa cruz high of austin swift, who was the driving force in their run to a state championship. junior is 5'6", and we'll go up against him when we play fullerton, where junior signed after a jaycee stint.
