I think as a fan base we're feeling a bit insecure. The Griz are not at their peak anymore, partly because of Krakwhore, and some other institutional problems that have mostly been addressed. The school is still in deep shit, which doesn't help things. There is a highly polarizing coach in charge, with an offensive gameplan that hasn't quite lived up to its billing. We were absolutely disrespected in the preseason, and even winning lots of games in conference isn't changing that opinion. This is a young team, plagued by injuries, that can't quite seem to hang with the big dogs at their full potential (I would kind of agree that we would not have beaten NAU if Cookus had known how to block). The conference, who's name is synonymous with our state and one we pretty much own, is being treated as if it is a single-bid league.
All of that is feeding the mentality this "we cannot win, that we should just be happy to beat our rivals, and if we're lucky, make the first round of the playoffs," mentality.
And that is bullshit. We are Montana. We still hold a lot of sway. And dammit, we are going to beat the Cats. We are going to get a home playoff game thanksgiving weekend, and we are going to beat whatever poor unfortunate souls who found their way here.
