Competition For Recruits

If they have the God Given talent and they are properly developed, they will become known and play at that level. However, not many have The talent. Baseball is a different sport, but recall Dave McNally.

I don’t know what goes on in Montana/Idaho now, but I do know what it was (and wasn’t) like when I was growing up. I don’t know if it’s “talent” that’s lacking all of the time. What I do know is that kids in other locales these days basically choose a primary sport as young as 7-8. There are resources for them to basically play that sport year-round, whether it be the rec season, club season, camps, private coaching, etc. I’m not a huge fan of it. I’m not sold on it being a good thing for the kids, but that’s the culture I’ve witnessed. I do think it can make certain kids ready to contribute at an earlier point at whatever college level they play because “all [sport] all the time” isn’t a foreign concept to them.

I agree in total. We went the whole way in an individual sport.

And Dave played more than baseball as a high schooler.

I think back to those wonderful days after Dave retired from baseball. He would play tennis with my son at the Yellowstone Racquet Club in Billings. After playing they would always sit and visit, just the two of them and Dave would let Nikos wear his World Series ring.
