Comparing the 2015 Griz with prior Griz teams

http://nationalsportsrankings.com/index.php?option=com_oneonone

This site allows you to play teams in a theoretical matchup. Kind of interesting. Not sure if there are other or better options out there.

For comparison 2013 NDSU vs 1996 Montana has NDSU winning 77 out of 100 by an average margin of 9 pts. Every time you run it you will get different results. I tabbed NDSU as the home team. Don't think you can play a neutral site.

96' MT beats 95' MT 71 out of a 100 by 4 pts

Is this in pie eating or hot dog eating?

Almost certainly pie eating. NoDak lies within in the so-called "Type II belt."

What MT team would you consider its best? 1995?

IMO 2001 was a better team, but 1995 had the best player we've ever had.

1996 would have given 1995 a run for their money. It would not surprise me if the '96 team with Ah Yat at the helm as a better team than the '95 team with Dickey at the helm. It was just a better, more balanced and veteran team than the '95 team.

Agreed - that 1996 team just hit one of the single greatest athletes to ever play at the 1-aa level in the natty.

Randy Moss was also one of the greatest receivers in NFL history as well.

WR has problems with depth, we have some really good guys but we need more to step up obviously. If Stitt isn't happy with them then I trust that there is an issue.

Bringing in a battalion of receivers certainly would scream that.

UM's best teams:

1. 1996
2. 2001
3. 1995
4. 1994
5. 2009
6. 2008
7. 2000 (five more minutes and they'd have been national champions)
8. 2004
9. 2002
10. 2007

In 1996 it was Randy Moss. And in 2009 it was Villanova RB Matt Szczur. In 2008 it was Richmond DE Lawrence Sidbury. In 2004 it was JMU RB Maurice Fenner. In 2000 it was GSU RB Adrian Peterson (coupled the loss of our starting QB, Drew Miller) Seems like every year we made the natty, there was that ONE player we couldn't seem to stop. :| :| :( :(

Are we not gonna add either of the '69-'70 teams. Both should have been champions if not for a stupid rule about JC kids not allowed to play in bowl games. How about the '37 Griz which were ranked in the AP tell their bone head loss to Idaho. 6 pro players from the '69 team and 5 from the '37 team. They should atleast crack your top ten.

Who did the 1969 Griz lose to in the Camelia Bowl 30-3. I'm getting old, I just can't remember.
Thank god for the internet. http://www.gobison.com/sports/1969/12/13/155023754.aspx?id=1705

Let's not forget 2010. Mariani, Tru. j, j Wilson, Tripp, Schillinger. A lot of talent on that team that beat SDSU and App St in what may have been the biggest games in WaGriz.

Stitt did not get into specifics. I am guessing based on some camp reports, a few too many WR's dropping passes a little too often, and lack of consistent big plays were his biggest concerns. Maybe those who were observing can add to this.

AtlantaGriz and mtgrizrule, the receiver lack of depth issue goes way back to when Stitt was hired and he immediately reviewed his receiving corps. He knew then he probably had some holes to fill. Because actually on signing day (when he signed 6 receivers), he said that a few true freshman receivers were probably going to have to play, depending on how the current depth panned out in spring ball. When spring ball ended, "Those front-line guys I am really excited about," Stitt said. "What I was disappointed in was the second crew... We're probably going to play some new guys at the receiver position this fall." And he then added more receivers, from transfers and high school. The Griz will have 19 receivers. http://www.gogriz.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/041715aab.html

mtgrizrule you are correct, Stitt said "We did have some good things going, but I was disappointed with a lot of dropped balls and some communication. "We had some checks that the receivers didn't catch and we would have some better plays on offense." http://www.gogriz.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/041115aac.html

'69-'70 teams have to make anyones top ten list. Smash-mouth to the max on both sides of the ball. And has been previously stated, were screwed out of a chance to complete an amazing run by the some group of bureaucrats. Fuli, Miller, Blancas, Kent, Caputo, and a host of others. No-brainer @ very least.

Agreed, great point. Those teams have to make the list, although I wouldn't guess where to slot them.

I'm guessing your not old enough to know why the Griz lost. Of course I'm not either but I know my teams history. Back then the NCAA would not allow JUCO's to play in bowl games. Montana's roster had 38 players, 18 of which were JUCOs including nearly 1700 yards rushing and the schools all time and single season leader in INT's. meanwhile NDSU had a 50 man roster to choose from with no JUCO's. 1970 was just the second verse of the same song.

Sooooo, to sum up, excuses are like a** holes. Everyone's got one but nobody wants to hear em.

Yes it was the 2009 team.

It's crazy looking back and knowing that the Griz had the ability to pull of a 4-peat.

2006: 2 points away from reaching the National Championship
2007: Had the talent to get to the National Championship, knocked out by pesky Wofford
2008: National Championship Appearance
2009: National Championship Appearance
