Long-time lurker, first-time poster here. Nothing to add to the football conversation (like most of you! lol) but as a prolific eater in Missoula and elsewhere couldn’t resist the where-to-get-a-steak discussion. Here’s the deal:
The Depot - The atmosphere is maybe fun depending on how you define fun? But otherwise you’d think it’s 1992 not 2022. If under seasoned steak, grocery store cabernet and cocktails served as “single” or “double” are your jam, then this is the place.
1889 - Food is materially better than The Depot, wine list veers towards interesting and cocktails are sometimes competent…but really it’s a “just fine” steakhouse in a hotel lobby like you’d find in probably a hundred other cities in the US.
Lolo Creek Steakhouse - a local institution, and it’s a fun experience without a doubt for reasons other posters have described. But if we’re being honest, the food is mediocre on their best day and the wine list makes us thankful we have the Depot
Plonk - deepest wine list in Missoula and solid cocktail program. More interesting / varied menu than the steakhouses listed above but we’re in MT so they do serve steak to comply with local ordinance. Food is often very good, rarely excellent. No reservations and will be busy on a weekend night.
Scotty’s Table - it’s fine and you’d probably be happy if you went there, but wine selection is a tier below Plonk’s, food is on par with them at best (though if I wanted a steak specifically, might choose Scotty’s Table?), and pretty certain no cocktails (beer/wine only)
Second Set Bistro - considering food alone, easily the best in Missoula - steak frites & ribeye miles ahead of anything 1889 puts out of the kitchen. But atmosphere is a little more low key & crowd can oddly vary - some Fridays you can’t in without a rez, others you’ll wonder why it’s almost empty. Solid wine list - not as deep/interesting as Plonk or 1889 but there are some gems. Unfortunately no cocktails - beer/wine only.
Jaker’s - someone mentioned this. Please, no.
