Lol. Lolo Creek is “a drive”??? It’s 8 freaking miles to Lolo. You’d think they were going to the freaking Lumberjack.

I thought that was a puzzling statement too. lol

That being said, if you're eating in Missoula, or Lolo Steakhouse, make a reservation, everything is so effing packed around town nowadays. Also, Lolo Steakhouse is bomb.

theres no reservations allowed at lolo steakhouse... I like to go and put my name down on the list then head up to the distillary for a few drinks, they call you when a table is ready

See. A man with a plan.

1889 Steakhouse for the best meal in town. But also pricey, check the online menu so you do you get surprised.

Bonus of that place is that you are within a block to the recommended bars of Missoula. Stockman (Stocks), Reds, Missoula Club (MO Club)

If you want a good steak, I definitely do not recommend 1889 Steakhouse. It has New York a la carte prices and it's always overcooked. Lolo Steakhouse is not fancy but it is worth the time and short drive. The distillery next door to the Lolo Steakhouse is great for relaxing while waiting for a table.

Funny that a few of you have not liked 1889. I've always had a good experience there and cannot get the contractors to go someplace else. It is their default place when they come to town (company paying). Maybe it is the many Old Fashioneds they are drinking prior to dinner.

Lolo Steakhouse reminded me of a 70s steakhouse. Good meat if you go with their priciest cuts, but the experience was nothing special. Cold veggies and ranch dressing for the pre-meal snack? Am I a toddler?

On the other hand, the distillery above it was solid and had great views of Lolo Peak.

1889 is for yuppies, lolo steakhouse is a MT experience... that simple

Has there been a yuppie sighting since the 80's? Must be all the customers in their pink polo shirts and turned up collars...

+10000000

It shocks me that anyone still recommends the Depot. It has been sub par for years.

Lol... Lolo steakhouse is fun for tourists cause they get a "Montana experience" with all the big game on the walls, but the food there is and always has been mediocre at best.

It does not hold a candle to 1889 in terms of the quality of food. It's not even a debate...

The quality of meat and cooking is far superior @ 1889. Lolo Creek has MT charm, but the food is really nothing special.

Sorry, but hard disagree on 1889. Had an entire group of about 15 on a business trip agree it was one of the worst most expensive steaks any of us had eaten. It’s like they forgot that salt existed. Thank goodness it was on the company dime. The next night of that trip we had the exact opposite experience at lolo creek, which was outstanding.

Well that was outlier then... I have eaten at both spots more times than I can count. Lolo Creek is completely mediocre. Not bad in any way. Just not great at all.

i love how they bring the cold veggies to the table straight away without even asking. and I love how you get two servers, one for drinks and one for food.

1889 is overpriced and over rated.

I really wanted to try 1889 when I was in town last weekend, but I had kids with me so it would've probably been a waste. The menu, atmosphere, and food pics from reviews looked awesome. I don't think the prices were out of line for an upper-tier steakhouse at all. I guess if the food sucks, I may have dodged a bullet. I'll give it a go next time I'm in town regardless because the menu items and pics look legit.

I've been to Lolo several times. It's cheap but whelming in my opinion. Probably personal preference. Backyard USDA Choice versus chef-created dishes with high-end cuts (again, just based on pics of 1889). Both definitely have their places for different occasions.

On a Griz weekend, there is no better place than the Depot. Great and friendly atmosphere. Lots of Griz people there. One co-owner is a former Griz athlete. The other co-owner is great too. One or both of them work the floor almost every night. The Depot has 3 adjacent but completely connected places to eat and drink (assuming they have now opened the formal dining room from covid days). The Deck is a great place to look around, mingle, drink, eat and watch sports. I assume that various UM teams still take their recruits/families to the Depot, at least they used to.

1889 has good food, including steak, but doesn't have the larger friendly atmosphere full of Griz fans. And, as noted, is very expensive.

JD Quinn takes his Griz teammates, and GrizPony and me, to the Depot on every Homecoming. JD is a great and fun guy, has a nice job, and is married to a great woman and hotshot lawyer whom he met at UM.

If you don't care about atmosphere, then get a Costco steak and find a BBQ.

Hey Griz fans,
Coming in on the charter Friday afternoon and looking for some advice on where to eat Friday night. Prefer a decent and fun place. Good drinks and atmosphere. Steak would be awesome.

Also looking forward to the tailgate. Been there before but don’t recall if “the enemy” is welcome to join locals? Love getting to meet and bs with locals.

Looking forward to the game. What’s your expectations of the outcome?

I forgot to mention that you absolutely have to go to Paul’s pancake parlor for breakfast. The pancake selection is probably the largest in the state, perhaps the northwest 😂 and the sourdough pancakes in particular are excellent. The starter is like 80 years old or something like that, they have a little tid bit about in in the menu. Definitely worth adding to an order if going with something other than pancakes.

I can’t even get into Paul’s on a random Tuesday morning with my kid without a 20-30 minute wait. So if you’re going on a Griz football weekend, I’d suggest going as early as possible and being prepared to wait outside in the smoke. :twocents:

My only advice…show up, drink up, and do not shut up. Wherever you go, whatever you eat, and the conversations you’ll have; it will be one of the funnest weekends of your adult life.
