Coming to Lynchburg?

I mentioned this in a couple of PMs recently, but some of you who have been jonesing to get on some skis or a snowboard may enjoy checking out our SnowFlex slopes. It sits on the side of Liberty Mountain above the main part of campus.

It is nowhere near as long as the Snow Bowl and it doesn't even have any snow. But it is year-round downhill fun and is relatively cheap. It seems to be most popular with the snowboarders because it has a bunch of ramps. A lot of guys practice her in the summer since sunny & 80s is the perfect time to hit the slopes at SnowFlex.

THAT is too cool!

I promised lodging suggestions and here are some places that help us "Fill the Bill". There are a slew of hotels by our campus. Because of the nature of our school, we have a ton of visitors constantly coming to campus for intensives, gradations and families traveling in from out of state. So the past ten years has seen an explosion of new properties being built and opened within a mile of our campus. Most are clean and well-managed. But here are some choices that are big favorites for us:

1. Craddock Terry Hotel - The idea of an upscale hotel and restaurant in old shoe factory may sound odd. But it is exceptionally cool and will go over very well with wives who are shoe afficionados. It is located about 15 minutes from campus near downtown Lynchburg on a bluff overlooking the James River. It has several quality restaurants on site including a terrific pizza place that regularly wins our FlameFans Best of Lynchburg poll.

2. Fairfield Inn & Suites - The reason why I mention this chain establishment is because it is owned by the school and is just a short walk to the stadium. It sits on the edge of campus just across from the SnowFlex resort which is also moderately walkable up the sid eof the mountain for hearty Montanans. This place typically books up very early. But once again, it typically wins our Best of Lynchburg category titled "Best Lodging Close to Campus". Looking at the above picture, that is Williams Stadium in the foreground and the Snowflex resort in the background and the Farirfield Inn lit up in green in between.

3. Kirkley Hotel - It may not look like much, but this former Hilton brings the best bang for the buck in Lynchburg. The local owners have done a solid job of updating this old property. It also seems to be the place that many out of town teams book for their players the night before games. We even see the Liberty team staying there when we visit from time to time. If you see a listing for a 3- or 3.5-star property near LU on Hotwire or Priceline or similar sites, this is probably what they are referencing, By watching those type of sites, I have stayed here svereal times on game weekends in recent years for less than a hundred bucks. And just like Missoula, these hotels are very aware of game weekends and rates tend to reflect that knowledge.

Bumping this back up for those headed to Virginia this week.

Here's a pic from our season opener a couple of weeks ago:

Any advice on game-day activities for us visitors? My group of 3 Montana guys are driving down from NYC on Friday. We're hoping to check out the tailgates, mingle with some fans, etc. We're staying at the Hilton Garden Inn, can we walk to campus from there or should we drive? Also, I know you said responsible use of solo cups would likely be tolerated, should we bring our own or is that something we'll find once there?

Nice looking stadium and vista Sly! :thumb:

Thanks! We are very proud of our gameday experience. Tailgating will not be up to Missoula standards, but once you get in the stadium I have feeling Griz fans are going to be thoroughly impressed.

Tailgating at Montana is no big whoop its just sprinkled around the stadium and not concentrated like a wheat field and nothing like bigger programs.

Do you have any suggestions before the game? What time should we arrive to the stadium? Any suggestions on where to go, what to do, etc? We have the whole day free and hope to make the most of the game-day experience. We know the tailgating will be different, that will be part of the fun.

SlyFox is being a great visitor to our website, you don't have to question his judgment of our tailgate scene. You owe Sly an apology.
By the way Sly your campus and surrounding area look awesome. I have to be in Boston this weekend, wish I had time for a side trip. It really is beautiful there.

No apologies necessary. I had a great time in Missoula in 2012 in spite of the smoke. I hope that Griz fans feel the same level of hospitality in Virginia. It should be a gorgeous night and a very loud crowd.

Montanasquibby - Go back to Page One of this thread. There is a ton of cool stuff to do in the Lynchburg area on gameday before you head over to the campus for the game.

There are plenty of parking lots with shuttle buses. But if you get there early enough, the lot beside the baseball stadium (which you guys need to check out) usually is a great place to set up shop without a parking pass. And it is just a short walk around the track/soccer stadium to William Stadium. The key is getting there early enough in the day. We're a ridiculously fast growing school in the midst of a half-billion dollar renovation. So there are construction projects around every corner.

Greetings Liberty fans, and Sly fox - long-time UM fan (and graduate) that just moved to the Raleigh area. Was lucky that this year the Griz play Liberty, only a couple hours away!

I went onto the Liberty site to buy tickets (heck yes I'm going) and with my wife and 3 kids, I hope to make it a sight seeing journey and a 3-4 day weekend.

However, on the ticket site, I saw that general admission tickets were $65 per. so for 3 kids and 2 adults - we're looking at a chunk of change. I note that the Griz game is Parents weekend and it could be expected that the ticket prices are raised, but is my information correct - $65 per ticket for GA?

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Id love to go to the game and enjoy your beautiful campus and this part of the country. I'll also be a classy Griz fan and enjoy the camaraderie of the game (besides, with my 3 kids there, I pretty much have to behave :) ).

thanks much.

Hey Grizfan 92! I see you are in Raleigh...if you have FB, check out my page "East Coast GRIZ." It is a meeting place for displace GRIZ like ourselves:-) I am in Asheville and graduated UM in 97. See you in Lynchburg and GO GRIZ!!!

What time do people start showing up for the game?

Sly Fox,

Thank you for your informative posts. Does the stadium have a policy on bringing snakes to the game? If so, can they be used for non-religious purposes? Thanks in advance!
