College Methuselahs, Bowl Games, and NIL

Sad ... but it's how things are now.

We asked ourselves: Why would a guy leave a football powerhouse like Ohio State for Syracuse (basically, a basketball school)? Answer:First, he wanted "certainty" about being the starter next year (that is, he didn't like the idea of having to actually compete for the position). Second, he wanted more NIL money and OSU said "no" (whatever that means, exactly). So he goes to Syracuse, where he feels he can beat out anyone they might have, and they, apparently, waved more $$$ at him.

I would argue that if OSU was shopping for a portal QB already, this is less about the kid not wanting to compete and more about not feeling they had confidence in him.

I do not disagree with your premise. However, if the coaches didn't have any confidence in him ... So what? Would that mean he wouldn't be given a fair shot in an open competition? I very much doubt that, since he had very good numbers for them. If his feelings were hurt because of their lack of confidence ... well, suck it up, buttercup. To me, this shows lack of confidence in himself ... or it was all about the money.

You could also argue the unwillingness to increase NIL as a sign of no confidence. Why would anyone stay at a place that they believe has no confidence in their ability? But I am glad you would...

Why get personal? Did I say I would stay? I gave my interpretation/opinion of the situation, which is just that, an opinion.

It may well be about the money ... and perhaps rightly so. As the successful starting QB of a big-time program like OSU, in this new environment, he can legitimately expect to pull in some big-time money. If that didn't look like it was going to happen – for whatever reason(s) – it makes sense to head for greener pastures.

Isn't an opinion personal?

Credit where credit is due … to ESPN ( :? ). Like it or not, they do a good job of dreaming up a “new narrative” and making sure their broadcast crews sell it. When we first heard it, several games back, we did not know it would be repeated down the line. The story: Forget about all the opt-out and portal player who got this team into the bowl game but won’t play in it. Nope, we’re privileged to see all the stars of the future, who were hidden behind the starters. This is their chance to shine. Of course, that story has the virtue that it’s true. And, since we’re watching on TV, that’s fine (I guess). But we might be a bit reluctant to pay bowl-game prices for that "privilege." And, outside the fan bases of the two teams, how much will it draw in non-committed viewers? That remains to be seen.
