CDA I agree with you that SC is an awesome opportunity, and it won't be hard for them to hire a coach. I also agree that if offered Tinkle would probably take it, even with Tres still in high school. But I think Tinkle's dream job would be Gonzaga. there was an article in the Missoula magazine recently about Tinkle. He talks about how much he misses his family in Spokane, and how he wants to spend more time with his siblings as they are all getting older. His father was a Dean at Gonzaga in teh '70's. I think Tinkle would rather have the head job at WSU than SC just to be closer to his family.
This + I would also add that just because a job is in Cali that doesn't necessarily mean its a plumb job.

For better or worse, Tinkle has a better shot at getting a job at almost any PAC 12 program than he does at GU.

Also, who ever said it would be a "plumb job" just because it is in California? I agree that the UC Irvine job might not be the thing of dreams, but of the 24 NCAA Division I programs in California, there is no better job than USC, other than UCLA; and that's even debatable.

grizbeer has pointed out the Gonzaga and WSU programs as possible plums that could be attractive. Gonzaga is obviously well known but I really dont know anything about the state of the program at Wazu other than the conference angle. Other than the obvious pay increase, what would be attractive about Wazu?

SDSU is the best job in California these days. They OWN the state on the court the past 5-6 years to the tune of 32 straight wins versus CA teams, including USC & UCLA this year. Other than their 1-point loss to Arizona in a seesaw game earlier this season, they had a streak of 12 straight versus the Pac-12. PLUS!, it's not in LA, which sucks, no matter what GrizLA tries to blow up your backside.

I think you meant to type "team" instead of "job." Unless you like less money.
Also, nobody making PAC 12 coin would live in L.A. proper.

UH, Hancock Park, Century City, Palisades, Venice, Bel Aire, Brentwood, Encino..these are not cities, they are neighborhoods. I live in Pasadena, a separate city...UCLA even furnishes faculty with great beach homes in Playa del Rey....you are mistaken.

Yes Captain Obvious. There's no question that he is going to move up to a bigger program, the time and place are the only questions. The current mess in the La Brea Tar Pits isnt' the answer.
The Galen Center at USC is a damn nice arena. USC is a football school first and foremost, but has made some pretty good progress in bball. Their problems are not unique to the elite academic schools of the PAC. Those in metro areas, like Washington, SC, Cal play their games generally during an extended traffic rush...and, the elite schools attract thousands of students from over seas that have no clue as to what American universities offer, not to mention the tough demands of academia. Also, there are far more things to do than attend a basketball game. Times have changed. The universities have changed. Most are attracting highly motivated kids with a focus on being number one in the class...not conducive to a full stadium, and with that student comes the cultural interests of fine arts...Stanford just dedicated one of the greatest halls on any campus...that would not have happened in my time. Simply put, basketball is having a hard time drawing students on a regular basis. They will turn up for a "big" game..not like football. LA is no longer the LA most of people who hate it think it is. I can decide between skiing today, or the beach, or just sit around the pool...or not....it is not hard to recruit talent or coaches or faculty to schools here..so, not sure what the negative would be about being an "LA guy"....I feel lucky to live in the area...

Here is what might not be so great about CA. http://kdvr.com/2013/01/21/phil-mickelson-says-higher-taxes-are-causing-him-to-consider-retirement/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
We tax ourselves because we want a better place and we do all right...check the real stats...more billionaires, millionaires, businesses, start up, respected universities and medical facilities...one guy "thinking" of leaving Ca is hardly a rush...more move here daily...we pay more to the Fed so you can pay less....

Here's the first line from a great article about California. Keep your head in the sand Democrat.... "First Vallejo, then Stockton, then Mammoth Lakes, and now San Bernardino and soon possibly Compton. As Orange County Supervisor John Moorlach told Bloomberg News, the bankruptcy dominoes are starting to fall. One California city after another—following a decade-long spree of ramping up public-employee pay and pension benefits, as well as redevelopment debt—are becoming insolvent." What the heck, you can always wipe out the debt and start spending irresponsibly again. Weeeee!

With all the conference shuffling, it is a matter of time before SDSU is part of the PAC 16, along with 3 other programs. I am guessing Texas, BYU, and Oklahoma. Depending on how the realignment plays out, Boise State may even have a chance. BSU needs to up their academics and prove a lot more on the basketball court too.

I honestly think SDSU will be one of the teams though.
No, I don't think so. Most likely, a new league of Calif schools with a few mountain schools...SD state is making a good show but it is no PAC school. Many here, bemoan the fact that Utah and Colorado are now in the league..but, they both have fairly strong academics or potential...

I don't even think the Arizona schools should be in the PAC, but that's just me.
Maybe some of the meth belt schools, U of A, ASU, Colo, Utah, New Mexico, UNR, UNLV, and BSU should start their own conference.

You certainly have a point, even though I'm not sure what Encino is doing on that list. I should have said what most people view as L.A. proper is not where these coaches would live. That's kind of what I was getting at.

Wooden lived in Encino for years..nice place..I get your point, though. Most people think LA is Hollywood and South Central and Boyle Heights...the place is whatever you want it to be and that is the great attraction...Silver Lake, Downtown, Palms..all of it..heading down to Koreatown tonight...saw Shaq at a deli in Studio City the other night...too many corned beef sans for him..wow...

Then of course the BOR, Helena, et al could decide to go the Gonzaga rout; put ALL the football coaching $$$ into Wayne's pocket ala Mark Few and turn Wa-Griz into a terrarium for the botany department. 8-)

Even Forbes.com got a chuckle out of that one:

"For starters, courtesy of President Obama’s re-election and the subsequent fiscal cliff negotiations, Mickelson will experience an increase in his top tax rate on ordinary income from 35% to 39.6%, and an increase in his top rate on long-term capital gains and qualified dividends from 15% to 20%. Clearly, when faced with tax hikes of that magnitude, it stops making economic sense for Mickelson to continue to swing a metal stick up to 70 times a day in exchange for the $48 million he earns on an annual basis.
But it gets worse. Thanks to the expiration of the temporary 2% reduction in the payroll tax rate on the first $113,700 of self-employment income, Mickelson will have to fork over an extra $2,274 in tax during 2013, an additional burden that makes it hard to justify briskly walking as many as five miles per day, four days a week. In long pants, nonetheless."

I wish they would at least crunch the numbers for everything, rather than just the payroll tax increase, if they are purporting to show "what he is facing."

Pac 12 Coaches on the hot seat article. Ken Bone at WSU is one. If the Griz go undefeated in the Big Sky I would expect WSU might be calling:
http://seattletimes.com/html/budwithers/2020139754_withers16.html?prmid=obinsource" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Washington State

Coach: Ken Bone. Record: 66-53 (4 years). Pac-12 record: 22-35.

Synopsis: Bone voiced a wish to run more than his predecessor, Tony Bennett, but these Cougars can't score. They're last in the league at 63.5 points per game — and even Bennett's defensive-minded powers of 2007 and 2008 averaged 66-plus.

"Brock Motum is doing a nice job of scoring," Bone says, "but we need some help."

This is a school that's famously patient and likely will be with Bone, but the fans that aren't restless are absent. You have to go back two seasons to find a crowd of 5,300 for a Pac-12 game in Pullman other than Washington, and three nonleague games this season failed to draw 2,700.

I think the Cougs would try to make a splash hire. But absent that, Wayne would make a TON of sense for them.

First off northendzonedan, it is Wazzu. I love the Cougs but right now it is not a very attractive job. We are spending all our money on football and Coach Leach which I am excited about. I do think that if Coach Tinkle was ever contacted by WSU he would take a long look at it. 72 miles from his home town of Spokane, hard to pass up. Go Cougs and Go Griz!

Agree. This would be much less of a jump and make much more sense than somewhere like USC.
