Coach Tinkle

EVERY Big Sky coach (and every mid-major coach) is one NCAA tourney win (or even a good impression) away from entertaining multiple upgrade offers in prestige and money. Frankly, I want a coach with higher asperations. They are only gonna get there by suceeding here first. There will NEVER be a men's version of Robin Selvig. Tinks pay raise when (not if) he leaves will be substantial. Not many women's coaches make much $ and it is almost impossible to get hired as a male any more for D1 women's b-ball job.

Heathcote, Montgomery, Morrill, Taylor& Krysko have all used UM as a springboard to bigger and much more fruitful endeavors, and we benefitted from their exciting teams. Heck, even all-you-can-eat Pat Kennedy somehow parlayed his UM debacle into a bigger payday. No truly talented (men's) coach will stay here forever, and Tinks will certainly bolt as quickly as all 3 of his kids have bolted to greener pastures. I put the odds of Tres Tinkle graduating from any HS in Montana at about 2%. Their family clearly has an "achieve as high as you can, wherever that takes you" mentality and they are fortunate enough to have the talent to capitalize on that philosophy. I wish Tinks the best. He deserves it. He's a great guy. Whatever criticism I give him, that just comes with the territory. Bottom line is that I truly like the guy and I can't say that about many recent UM coaches. I have no doubt he's gonna get a sweet gig (double/triple+ the salary) within 2-3 years at the longest. If you don't realize that, you are naive.

Not that Mark Few's job is in jeopardy now, BUT if Gonzaga were to hire new coach in the next 10 years, I gotta think Tinks will be a major player (wherever he is coaching at the time). He is a Spokanite and Elle is going there. I could see that as a place he would stay forever if he ever got it.

Just after I started this thread, I got to wondering what and where are the best fits for him, and which programs would have what it takes for him to consider.

Gonzaga was actually at the top of my thinking too. Then again, no reason for Few to move.

I am sure Wayne would like to stay in the west, or not further east than the midwest. I doubt he would leave for better pay, unless it were a major conference, or a basketball school.

Here are the current standings for major conference programs, there are some very good programs struggling this year, with fanbases with high expectations. I have no idea how secure their coaches are, at any of these places. Who will be letting coaches go? What do you all think?

Safe to say Utah and USC are bad situations, and their coaches are given some time, which is good for LK. He has his hands full.

Arizona State is very disappointing, their coach has been their some time.

Oregon State is getting better, but still has a way to go, but I think they are at least a few years away from going another direction.

Washington State is struggling in conference play, but Bone is doing a solid job, and still early in his tenure, just like OSU a few years away from considering a change.

Stanford is struggling in conference, and with good basketball history. I wonder if they might be getting a little impatient? Their overall record though is solid.

UCLA is an average Pac 12 program, and that is unacceptable for UCLA. Their fan and alumni base are split on Howlands status,and program direction. History though is on Howland's side. That seat could be very hot in another year.

I honesty see the best fits for Wayne being at least a year away. Realistically, the only remote shot after this season, would be Arizona State. Potentially UCLA and Stanford positions being available might be worth the gamble at staying put at Montana. Even more so with the potential of next year's team being as high of ceiling as any GRIZ team. Jamar and Cherry are not going anywhere, post play can only be better, and the youth is very talented too. This year, and next year the GRIZ have the guard play capable of a win or 2 in the NCAA tournament, which would be great for Wayne, and the GRIZ.

Then again, the Big 12 schools have a lot of money to throw at any coach, and I will not be surprised if their will be a few openings from that conference after this season.

Wayne's options are looking very nice, no matter how he plays the cards. STAY WAYNE!! :thumb:

for what its worth, i was told by a recent griz guard about a year ago that tinks wanted to wait until after ellies senior year before really considering moving on. but after that he really wanted to get better competition for tres. man i wish he would stay here but it is not likely, nor do i blame him. i just hope he is patient and gets himself into a good situation. i hate seein small school coaches take the first bigger job available only to be out in 2 years.
