Coach K's Salary vs. ...

I know we have discussed his salary on here before, but I would like to know what his salary compares to some of the other mid-major programs that are currently having success. Gonzaga does not qualify. Also his salary here in Montana compared to say...an Illinois/Indiana school. Are they rational for the cost of living etc. I personally would like to see our coaching staff be compensated for what they have done in recent history. I am tired of hearing about low salaries being suitable because we live in Montana. If we want to win, I believe that we must be able to pay these coaches what they deserve. I would love to do the research, but unfortunately at this point in time it is difficult for me to do so. Thanks in advance.

You should try to get a copy of the March 11 Wall Street Journal. It has much of the information you want. Unfortunately, I don't think you can get the info online; they require a subscription for that.

I previously posted some of the highlights from that article, which looked at about fifty b-ball programs expected to make the NCAA tourney. They ranged from Duke on down to Northwestern State, and the article looked at revenues and spending as well as coach salaries. I threw away my copy, so I don't have the coaching salaries you'd like. But here's what I did record:

The chart listed Coach K's compensation at $120,000, and it was one of the lowest among the 50. There were a number of mid-majors in there, particularly ones like UM that had won their conference tourneys. The highest paid coach was Izzo at $1.6 million, with Duke's coach K at $1.4 million. Gonzaga's Few was said to get $500,000, tho it noted he just signed a new 10-year contract with more money. Nevada coach Fox was at $260,000, Lorenzo Romar at $890,000, Lute Olson $700,000, UCLA's Howland $910,000, and Cal's Ben Braun $850,000. (Those were interesting to me because they showed what Coach K could expect to get if he could land a Pac-10 job.)
