Coach K's comments on the coaches show (3/19)

Was proud of the season (obvious).

Said the kids coming back should be excited about next year.

He said although losing Kevin and Virgil, the backcourt is still pretty good for next year.

Jeremy asked him if the phones been ringing! Coach said his jobs not done here and that they're "not that far off" from where they need to be to compete w/ the big boys. However, they're not there "yet" but w/ a few players they could be.

He's heading to the JUCO National tourney today to watch Gus play and look for other players.

EDIT: He also mentioned that after playing against a "Charles Barkley/Karl Malone" type player, there should be some motivation to get into the weight room this summer. :thumb:

He also said he experienced "goosebumps" unlike anything he had previously enjoyed in his basketball career after the Nevada win and that he felt somewhat guilty that some of his younger players (Austin Swift in particular) didn't get more playing time during the year.

I took both of those comments as positive indications that the joy of working with these players might keep him here for at least another year.

last november, after we knew that seyfert would miss the entire season, i thought this'd be a "tweener" year what with kamaar davis gone, vanderjagt and chase not yet here, and nothing but youth and uncertainties up front--strait a sophomore; chavez's status unknown; van vliet, hasquet and sharp all freshmen. i thought we'd have to back off our ncaa ambitions and concentrate on building for the next few years. little did i know strait would blossom into the player he did; hasquet would by tournament time be making huge contributions; chavez would stick around the entire year; and sharp would provide valuable minutes as a true freshman. mix in the veteran leadership of criswell and matthews, the quicks of ellis, the defense of dhlouy, the coaching genius of krysko and his staff, and it became a magical year, more than any of us could have expected.

if there's one blemish on the year for me, it is the situation regarding austin swift, which i'm afraid we'll look back on with the same regrets we did jefferson heidelberger in football. i simply don't understand blowing off a redshirt year for so few minutes. krykso seems to be going out of his way now to praise swift and tout him as a coming star--an opinion i've held since seeing him play in his school's state championship run last year. we've traded what could be a spectacular year down the road for very few unproductive appearances this year, and i'm sure our coaching staff will wind up regretting it.

During the coaches show Krysco also indicated that he may be looking to sign as many as two players for next years team. I don't know how many times he and Tinkle mentioned Swift and Martin and how much they felt they put their person goals aside for the team. What that told me was that they feel real comfortable with these guys being major contributers. The Griz are looking real hard at the JC ranks right now. Krysco is at the JC national tourney right now, and Huse was recruiting at a Texas JC tourney about a week and 1/2 ago.

The only problem is that the numbers just dont add up. The Griz signed 4 recruits and are looking to add 2 more?

How can it be unless the 4 new recruits are Redshirting?

Even if the new recruits redshirt, they still take up scholarships. If the GRIZ sign another player for next year, then a current player is out a scholarship. It could be the GRIZ are looking at players for the 2007-2008 season.

I dont remember K ever indicating that they were looking to add 2 players for next year. He mentioned they were going to watch Gus at the tourney and check out any other good players there, but that could be for future classes. He may have mentioned something about recruiting another guy, but that just brings us back to square one: the speculation that a player is transferring because the Griz have offered a 5th scholarship to that Glasser kid already. Glasser is a PG, so does that mean that a scholarship PG is transferring?? no one knows, and I'm not gonna get into that again. Just wait it out and see what happens.
