Coach K. Five Bullets left to dodge for Griz fans

The job to watch out for now is Marquette. The coach there now, Tom Crean, is in the mix for both the Oklahoma and North Carolina State jobs. If he leaves Marquette, Krysko is a natural as a replacement. He played quite a while for the Bucks and his wife played for Wisconsin - Milwaukee. In addition, the money, lure of the Big East conference and a top 25 team are the kind of challenges he has made clear would get him to leave UM.

If crean were to leave there could be another Izzo/Spartan who could end up in Milwaukee. Jim Boylen who is on the State staff was a former NBA assistant coach with the Houston Rockets back when they were winning titles in the 90's. Two seasons ago he was an assistant with the Bucks. Prior to his NBA stint he was on the staff of Judd Heathcote at State. The guy has experience and NBA credentials.

In the article on Huse today, Krysko acknowledged that Pepperdine has been in contact also.

They are talking to about 30 different coaches and are going to bring in 5. I am really not too worried about Krysko going there to be honest. He has a great recruiting class, some nice returning players and his stock will rrise exponentially if he goes to the NCAA 3 straight years. Why take Pepperdine when 1 or 2 more years you can go big time for way more money and a chance to compete on the national level.

i heard there is a good chance he is going to move to pepperdine if he gets an offer...anyone have any better inside sources that know the situation?

at some point (probably right after the pepperdine selection is made) krysko will come out and say he's staying. coincedentally. that's usually how it works.

Pepperdine coaching job down to four finalists
By Jill Painter, Staff Writer

USC assistant Gib Arnold and UCLA assistant Donny Daniels are two of the four finalists for the vacant Pepperdine basketball job, according to sources. Metro State (Colo.) coach Mike Dunlap is rumored to be another.

Dunlap is the former coach at Cal Lutheran and also was an assistant at USC under George Raveling. Dunlap, who earned his degree from LMU, has won two Division II national titles in Denver.

Gonzaga assistant coach Bill Grier and Utah assistant Marty Wilson were not among the finalists, a source said. Grier was believed to be the early frontrunner.

Pepperdine's four finalists all have head coaching experience, according to a source.

You could kind of read between the lines the LK wasn't going anywhere based on his comments. If he got an offer he couldn't refuse, that is one thing, but that wasn't likely to happen this year. He will get his before its all said and done, I just hope he completes the task at Montana first. I kind of think he will, Larry has always been a finisher.

Briefs: Krystkowiak, Walberg are finalists for Pepperdine job
Daily News Staff and Wire Services

Montana coach Larry Krystkowiak and Fresno City College's Vance Walberg are the two finalists for Pepperdine's basketball vacancy.
Walberg was on campus in Malibu to interview on Thursday, a source said. USC assistant Gib Arnold will interview today and UCLA assistant Donny Daniels and Krystkowiak will interview next week. Krystkowiak has been the coach at Montana for two years. He took Montana to the NCAA Tournament in his first season.

Walberg is the coach at Fresno City College and his 2005 team went 34-0 and won the California's junior college championship.

While the bobcat job looked like it was Huse's from the get go based on the other two candidates, that is not the case here. The Fresno City college guy went 34-0 this year, and the assistants are from high profile teams. I hate to say it but I hope Krysko realizes he could do much better if he waited a year or two. It certainly doesn't hurt to go through the process and get his name out there which may be what LK is doing. He wasn't Academic All American for nothing.

Word from Pepperdine is that Fresno City College coach Vance Walberg did not interview well.

Before interviews Pepperdine Boosters / Fans rankings

1. Larry Krystkowiak
2. Vance Walberg
3. Donny Daniels
4. Gib Arnold

Hope this works OK - link to Pepperdine fan message board:

Please remember that its a message board with fans providing their "free" analysis and opinions. Some of the fans question why LK would be interested in the Pepperdine job (perceived lateral move, higher salary but higher cost of living) and question his relative lack of Los Angeles recruiting experience.
