Coach Engstrom

Sadly, Engstrom doesn't seem to be accountable to anyone. For sure, a good gig making damn good money.

In all the FCS, has there been a "fall" from national semifinalist to 8th place finish in the conference as UM has just done? The same team minus a qb who developed over a season and a few lost grads, with good talent behind them remaining finished lower than Northern Colorado?

If you give UND the tiebreaker, we actually finished tied for 9th :( Either way, it sucks. Can't believe we finished below UNC in the Big Sky. No way any Griz fans would've expected that after last year.

The only example of another team falling so quickly that I can think of would be maybe Georgia Southern when they had a coaching change. It wasn't quite Semi-Finals to bottom of the conference, but it was playoffs to bottom of the conference.

Georgia Southern went 8-4 in 2005 with a conference record of 5-2, then in 2006 under the new coach they were 3-8 with a conference record of 2-5.

Their new coach was there only 1 year.

AHA! Can't believe I forgot this one...

The Bobcats in 1984. Finished 12-2 and won the NC. The next year they were 2-9 with a single D1 win coming against the Griz (their last win against the Griz before the streak began). The next year they were 3-8, then hired Solomonson and went 1-10...etc etc.

With the Bobcat example, it was the same coach that they won the NC with though that went 2-9 the next year. I'm pretty sure in most examples where a team kicks ass one year, hires a new coach then finishes at the bottom of their conference right away, we'd see that the "new" coach would only be around a year (like the Georgia Southern example).

I wonder what the big money donors and sponsors are saying? I can imagine that the phone has been ringing and the threat of donations drying up. The loss of revenue to the University an to Missoula from not having a playoff game. I hate to say it but that what makes the changes happen.

Well, with that "qb" we'd probably have been 8-3 even WITH our defensive issues...in all honesty it's probably a good thing we weren't. JJ would have hidden a TON of flaws on this team. It's now been exposed for exactly what it is, and can be corrected accordingly.

The future is bright for the Griz whether MD retires early or not. However, an early retirement and recruitment of a hopeful long tenure coach in the coming weeks would quicken the pace to getting back on track with player recruiting and more consistent play. Would I want to come to MT if I knew MD had a chance of coaching more years? No.

That being said, I could have easily handled the Griz going 0-11 this year, I can handle GGNez's incessant nagging like a Raggedy Ann doll that keeps pulling its own string and I would listen with a smile on my face, I could handle a week long insurance conference, and I could even handle losing to the scats for the next 5 years, but being below NC in the final BSC standings is like a dagger in the chest.

THAT is one of the most relevant posts on this site right now. I would be interested to know how fund raising at UM is doing this year compared to the past years. I have stopped giving to UM until major changes are made at Main Hall. I am a legacy donor that has advised my atty to cancel and it is now directed elsewhere. That is the only way change happens in a situation like UM is in. This is not just an athletic dept issue, it goes deeper than that, from what I can glean. Maybe, being so distant I am ill informed but I simply see the President and the cronyism of a small place as the major source of disappointment.

I know a LARGE donor and every conversation starts with "that Engstrom"... business people in town are looking at last years numbers and don't have playoff weekends in the pipeline...This part of the equation is picking up steam :grenade:
