Soccer Citowicki leaving for Wazzu?

Who did you recommend they hire?
Honestly I would go with Cavallo. His experience from D3 through D1. Yea he might have started as a GK coach but he’s now a HC in his own right with a decent record. With his background at especially D2 he understands the NCAA scholarship system & transfer portal, also knows how to work with less.
My hope is that with the transfer portal he can bring in some 5th years to help fill out the roster. Clemson women’s lacrosse did it when building their program with some success. Plus he already knows what it’s like to recruit here in Montana, which is huge!

Think Lisa could be a good asst coach for him to fill the slot Coach Ash left. Keep Coach J and you have a solid coaching staff to build a new team around.

Why Cavallo over Weber? Just mind blown about this argument.

Solely based off Head Coaching experience at a non-D1 level? Cavallo has made two very brief and un-wow stops at the D1 level (Nevada and Denver).

Chris was an assistant at North Dakota before we hired him. We hit a home-run with that. Not regurgitating a Head Coach just to get a Head Coach.

Reminder everyone…the Griz have 6 players and 3 incoming players. A team must be built. It is January. Need an elite recruiter, big personality, and a WINNER- leave the Head Coach experience narrative at the door. Winners are winners regardless of the seat they sit in. Not a comparable when you compare these three candidates influence of winning in the programs they have represented during their careers.

The most recent alums have spoken to admin. The remaining players and incoming recruits have as well. They want Weber to be the hire. There are several Griz, not Cougs who have stated if they knew Weber was the hire they wouldn’t have left. If he isn’t hired we will have less players than the few we have now. Players can still go into the portal.

Lisa isn’t going to interview for the HC and take an assistant job. She is a sitting Head Coach currently. Not how that works.

Molly needs a job. Got fired at Ole Miss. Tricky hire for Chris. Unsuccessful head coach at two stints and now back to assistant world position with a head coach desire. Power dynamic there will be interesting.

Very well said, all Max’s accolades are very much detailed on the BSU and EWU websites.

His elite recruiting can’t be overlooked. He is also ECNL recruiting director

I’ve been lurking since Chris’ announcement… finally going to comment (with my daughters permission 🙄)

Griz has been on her short list since going to an ID camp early in HS and based on her communication with coaches it’s seemed like they are a fan of her too. She’s defense and loved working with Coach J.

My background: I played college soccer (midfield) in college DII two years until having one too many concussions. Then several years after college was a mediocre ECNL coach for 5 years… stepped back to fulfill my destiny as a soccer mom since, but still have contacts sprinkled all around the country.

First thing… I’ve worked for people who were promoted straight into leadership with absolutely zero idea how to lead humans. experience matters. A lot. Head coaches are essentially bosses. There’s a huge learning curve to how to successfully lead other adults because you can be a great coach to players and a horrible manager of coaches under you. That’s why most coaches don’t jump straight to D1 HC. A couple I knew who did regretted it as the learning curve was huge and it was hard to keep staff while it was hard to figure out.

I’ve talked to a few PNW coaches familiar with Max through ECNL mostly. Sounds like he’s a solid coach and overall good guy. One of the coaches suggested they think his family is so engrained in Boise he may not take the job. (Which seems to track with what someone on here said about him getting several HC offers and turning them all down. To me applying for jobs, getting them, and then repeatedly turning them down is a huge red flag. Perhaps he’s shopping offers to boost his pay or leverage at BSU. At his age you likely know if you’re willing to take a job before you apply. Also the cost of living in Missoula is much higher than Boise.

Several people I’ve talked to about Cavallo highlighted his recruiting abilities. That was basically his main role at Denver. His recruit went on to be the Summit League Defender of the Year. So I think that concern is unfounded. Sounds like he is down to earth and a player centered coach.

Seems like recruiting to Billings was an uphill battle… because, well, it’s Billings. Never been, but told I haven’t missed anything. (Let me know if I’m off base)

Missoula? Not the same problem. Different vibe, different pull. And everyone—players, parents, other coaches—who’s dealt with Cavallo seems to come away saying, “Yeah, good dude.”

People love Liz. Several of my contacts told me she’s one of their favorite people… but they didn’t say much about her soccer wise, which was weird. Made me wonder why? I don’t have a horse on the race or a kid ready to for sure go to the Griz (but she has emails drafted for whoever the choice is)

It was interesting to have someone who was part of the inner circle interviewing the candidates here giving us play by play. (Thanks for that insight)

If my daughter goes to UofM perhaps I’ll meet some of you… (she will not consider WSU as there is no skiing close enough and that’s the hill she’s willing to die on)

To those players watching… enjoy the ride. It goes faster than you think.

If this was a football HC'ing position discussion, it'd be a no-brainer - Weber's experience wins out, despite him being a bit crusty around the edges. I mean, Hauck isn't exactly touchy feely. Or that Cignetti guy. lol. But get the feeling Cavallo is in the mix because he's the nice guy of the group. Maybe Weber has a cat named "Grizzly" ; ) Will get behind either one but Weber's resume and club connections are clearly better.
Not every nice guy coach takes his team to Elite 8 (of any high level tournament)

I had definitely heard he’s a nice guy, but I’d bet his resume had other specifics

Also very telling that she hasn’t received an offer from anywhere yet worth it to her to take… she was one of the first D1C goalies in the portal and is still in there. Not sure how much leverage she has, especially with the new staff but having a familiar upperclassmen back wouldn’t hurt.

Welcome PGM! Thanks for post.

Any insight to why no candidate was offered the position yet or has someone been offered ??
They had interviews MON, WED, and FRI… I would venture to bet we won’t officially hear until the offer is accepted.

So if they make an offer and has some negotiations today. It’s not unusual for there to be back and forth and lawyers involved in the process.

Did a little research. Kyle Hansen of KPAX is following Max Weber on Twitter, and it appears Weber is following the Griz Soccer page as well. I'm thinking we got our guy!

With that logic he’s obviously going to Gonzaga cause he follows them and they follow him back. 😆

Kyle Hansen following a coach who is originally from Montana isn’t groundbreaking imo.

It could be max since it’s down to 3… but maybe we should wait to hear :)
