Soccer Citowicki leaving for Wazzu?

Today’s interview was not great, lots of vagueness. Couldn’t pin down on what she would do to continue winning at UM, just said she has her own unique coaching style but couldn’t nail down what she does differently than other coaches.

Hopefully Fridays interview goes better than the first 2.

UM needs to get a fire under them so the new coach can get started rebuilding!

With the number of players that stayed and the ones that are recovering from injuries there isn’t even enough players to play 3v3!

Why do the Griz need another GK'er coach (Cavallo -former MSUB coach)? I assume AD is saying J has to be rehired by new HC, and maybe that's wrong, but assume that's a requirement at this point to help Griz bring in transfers. But that would not be a smart move by the Griz. We don't need 2 GK'er coaches on a staff of 3. We also need someone with recruiting chops to help with an immediate impact on bringing in recruits/transfers. Boise AHC clearly holds the upper hand there. Cavello should go be GK'er coach at WSU
Does Cavallo have ties to Washington or WSU? Otherwise. I don’t get the comment about him going to be a GK coach there

Friday's interview is Cavallo right?

I wouldn’t imagine any of the options will bring their own players since the two who are HC aren’t D1 level and Max wouldn’t do that to his HC as that would be a big bridge to burn.

I just looked to verify, UMSL is DII not DIII. They made elite 8. That’s honestly pretty impressive.

I asked someone in the know about the interviews thus far about Steven Cavallo jumping ship on a successful program so fast and they basically said UM has been his dream job for years. They even said he named his dog Missoula (can anyone verify that random detail? Lol) They made it sound like he wasn’t initially going to apply because of the timing, but realized that it being his dream job made him need to try because it might not open up for a long time.

With the Willamette record being so poor, it can be concerning, but when you are coaching players who don’t get any financial incentive for being an athlete, your ability to recruit better players might be limited. Perhaps with scholarship money she’d be able to recruit much better. Her being an alum would definitely be a bonus.

I agree it was well known that Chris has been looking for a long time for his next job. I’ve also heard that he’s had offers at bigger schools that he has turned down cause it wasn’t the right fit (not sure if that is soccer wise or for his family). Seeing what he was making per year 8 years in and seeing what the WSU coach was making, he’d be a fool not to go. It’s surprising so many girls are following, but WSU didn’t leave a full roster of uninjured players. So it makes sense he’d offer to bring so many girls he already knows and trusts. I bet he was surprised about how many took him up on the offer.

Anyone privy on how that process is going? Did everyone going end up in Pullman?

I can address this with some confidence as my daughter is still in touch with some Griz players she met on her trip there and as parent of a recruit, that’s something we need to pay attention to - how many players in a position, what year they are, etc

Griz lost 9 seniors to graduation this year- the largest class in awhile. Then there were the 4 roster cuts Chris chose to make right after the 2025 season instead of waiting through Spring - all four joined new D1 programs, btw.

December Chris gets job offer, and asked 10 players to come to WSU and 9 players opted to join him. (TBH, the facilities there really are top notch for women’s soccer). Personally I don’t think Chris wanted to decimate the Griz. But he wanted “his players” as WSU plays (or played) a very different style than the Griz - and 15 WSU players went into the portal after Shulenberger left. (He brought 5 to Ole Miss)

So that’s how the roster has been whittled down what feels like so quickly.

Been digging more because things being posted on these candidates are frustrating me, so will fight that with more disputes…

The fact that there is an argument over these three candidates is laughable. There is a clear pecking order, and it isn’t close, when you pull the onion back on all their resumes and do some research to dispute the claims made on this forum thread. The order is clear to this Griz soccer alum and it isn’t close.
  • Weber
  • Cavallo
  • Lubijic
I also spoke with a committee member today (sits in influential chair in the dept and was there when I played). Two interviews down. One left. Told me that if they let Max leave campus on Monday without offering him the job it would be a huge mistake. Committee member said that Weber was “impressive” to the committee members with his vison to take Griz Soccer to new heights and build off the tradition, his charismatic nature, and ambition.

Further insight...I have a former Griz teammate who is a long-standing youth coach at one of the largest, most successful ECNL clubs in the country. I called and asked her if she knows of Weber and she says she knows him well. Asked her for her insight into the topics being discussed on our little Griz forum.

Topics of Dispute:

1. Big Sky Conference Experience.
  • She said…look directly at what Weber did in the Big Sky during his tenure there. He helped take EWU from last place in the Big Sky to two NCAA Tournaments as Big Sky Champion, against our Griz, and did it quickly. Took over in 2014, went to NCAA tournaments in 2016 and 2017 and took USC to OT in one of those years. We didn’t win a single championship when he was at EWU. A Montana native beating us in our own conference. The moment he leaves for BSU, Chris gets hired and Griz start winning again. Hmmm.
2. Recruiting.

She said... the guy is one of the best recruiters in the country- flat out.
We have no players. We need an elite recruiter to get just the semblance of a team. Weber seems to be that. Has helped build repeat championship programs, at some difficult places mind you (Walla Walla & Cheney), let alone BSU success since he arrived. Come to find out, two of the most decorated high school Montana players ever (Brittany Delridge and Olivia Collins) both were recruited to the programs he was coaching at. Both were Gatorade Players of the Year and hell Delridge is a Missoula native and chose EWU over our Griz. Collins , from Bozeman, plays for BSU and is a senior I believe. I watched these women play- in high school- two of the best Montana kids ever- both went to play for a Montanan instead of the Griz. Tells ya something.

3. Head Coaching Experience.

She said…he coached games this year as Head Coach at BSU…so I looked that up. Come to find out, Weber was the acting Head Coach for two games this past season, when Boise State won back-to-back Mountain West Championships. First against Colorado State at home (Head Coach suspended from red card previous game) and won 1-0 and on the road at Grand Canyon University (can’t find out why Head Coach wasn’t there) and he won 1-0, which clinched the regular season championship. There is your Head Coaching experience. Happy now?

How do you expect someone to become a Head Coach without giving them the opportunity? Chris was an Assistant Coach at North Dakota (finished last in the Big Sky the year he got the job). Weber was an Assistant in the Big Sky at the same time and won the conference championship….each sat in the exact same chair. Look at the College Football Seminal Coaches….all were Assistants then got their first Head Coaching jobs (Lanning @ Oregon, Smart @ Georgia, Golding @ Ole Miss). Stop with this silly narrative.

4. Weber applies for jobs and doesn’t get them.

She says…she knows that he has been offered several jobs within the Big Sky alone over the past couple years. Told me Idaho State, Eastern Washington (after he left), for sure he was offered and turned down, and she thought one of either Northern Arizona/Weber State. She never heard that he chases jobs, but the opposite in fact, that he hasn’t left for offered jobs due to family, location, and pay structure. Clarified that WSU went after Chris and him. Those two were chased for the job. Weber was a finalist for WSU along with Chris. Those were the final two candidates. Been verified by several sources. So …the program that hired away our Griz head coach…had Weber as the other finalist. A program, in WSU, with even more tradition than that of my Griz program thinks that highly of a candidate some of you have as not as our hire.

5. Youth Coaching – College Recruiting Rumors
  • She said…this sounds like a jealous parent comment. That made me laugh. She said his youth teams do very well at the ECNL level, which is impressive because they are “little Idaho” playing and finding success at that level. She said he places his players all over the country at good college programs, to play, but the best ones usually stay and play for BSU. I looked up Boise based players on the BSU roster, since Weber joined, and looks like all the highest-rated local players currently play or have played for him at BSU, other than the two sisters who play at Stanford. The guy has done some impressive things as a youth Head Coach it seems in not major soccer markets. Last I looked Griz Soccer is not in a metropolis.
Lastly, I asked her if the Griz should hire Weber?

She said that they would be lucky to get him, to be their next HC. But said, if they just lost their HC due to being paid inadequately then they are not going to get Weber for some cheap discount because it is his home state.

I am hoping we haven't screwed this up.

Chris was a Head Coach at St. Catherine for six years before being an assistant coach at UND. So a bit more experience than Max with two games under his belt.

From what I’ve observed in several sports, being a head coach is more than just deciding who to sub in when during a game… the BS HC was suspended from two games not the rest of his job responsibilities as HC.

I’m concerned that the pay won’t be adequate to make it feasible to live in Missoula cause prices are crazy. If the choose is max, we’ll rally behind him and the Griz just like we will for any of them.

When Citowicki took over at the Griz in 2018, the team actually won the Big Sky Tournament at Weber State. If the Griz had finished last in conference play, they would not have even qualified for the tournament. That makes it an odd point to bring up, especially since it is easy to fact-check and clearly incorrect.

Does anyone have connections in the soccer community who can share more information about the other two candidates? We have plenty of detail on Max at this point, but very little on the others.

Unless your friend has insight into all three candidates, it feels hard to claim one is definitively the best. It seems more accurate to say she thinks max is a strong option and appears to be a good fit based on what she knows.

The players who are still here, and J included, deserve the strongest hire possible. The parents of the six remaining players are hopeful but understandably anxious. Ultimately, I am trusting the hiring committee to make the right call.

As for BSU pulling higher-level recruits from within Montana, that is not surprising. They have lighting and upgraded facilities. It is interesting how the conversation keeps circling back to that point, and hopefully the administration is paying attention.

Remember...Soccer is played in the Fall- your incorrect.

Big Sky Tournament Champions/NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure in the Big Sky conference.

2014: Northern Arizona
2015: Northern Colorado
2016: Eastern Washington
2017: Eastern Washington
2018: Weber was at BSU. Montana won the Big Sky.

I was responding to you saying “(finished last in the Big Sky the year he got the job)”… so if you mean the season before he got the job your statement is still wildly inaccurate.

In 2017 Griz ended 2nd in conference play… Chris got hired Spring of 2018… then Griz won the conference tournament. At no recent point in history have Griz been last in conference play. We were a decent team under Mark too (though not a fan of him otherwise for obvious reasons).

As far as how can a coach get head coaching experience without getting a shot; well the same way Chris, Liz and Steven did. Starting D2 or D3 and going from there.

And can we all agree that what’s done in the football coaching world doesn’t exactly translate to soccer?

First thing,

Love the passion the Griz fans have, especially for soccer, this passion comes through in person and while watching on ESPN+.

What happens if the top two candidates turn the job down, what next. What if the vision to take the program to the next level which can be done, is not supported by the current administration in terms of financial support/facility upgrades.

With limited revenue share/NIL for Olympic Sports, the next recruiting tool are facilities and player experiences. Has anyone done a cost analysis on upgrading the locker room and adding lights. Boise State added lights about 2 years ago and more than doubled their attendance, having games starting at 3-4 pm to 7 pm made a big difference. Having recruits on campus during a night game does wonders.

Can’t remember the exact numbers for the lights but the locker room building recently had a contractor out there and the cost to bring the building up to code is going to cost $500k - $1mil.

The building has numerous code violations and could be condemned if the county inspector came out there for an inspection. There have been several offers to fix the building but school has turned them down citing Unions have to do the work.

Thanks for the reply, if those numbers are accurate, it would be probably less expensive to build a new locker room.

What’s crazy is the locker room building is supposed to be used for track n field team too. There is no way that building can fit those 100+ athletes. Soccer and T&F need a proper building, Griz operate like an east coast D2 school.

I do know this. The last of the major projects to the Adams Center are nearly complete. The Lady Griz and Volleyball locker room projects are underway, I just saw on next weeks BOR agenda that UM is seeking authorization on the $750k project to the East and West Auxiliary Gym's to resurface the floors and install new bleachers. I suspect that project probably happens in Spring/Summer.

Once all of that is done, Haslam has spoken about how they need to do some work out at South Campus. He's mentioned a new Indoor (and outdoor) Tennis Center over by the Softball field. I know he has mentioned lights for the Soccer field, and I believe he also mentioned more bathrooms and things like that out there as well. So I do think all that stuff is coming, I just don't know how soon. Have any of the finalists that have been interviewed mention the need for lights and locker room renovations? I'm just curious if it's come up at all in the interview process.

Not trying to pile on here - but this ⬆️ Griz soccer is too good of a program to be working with no lights, in a glorified equipment shed, sharing restrooms with spectators on game day!
My daughter got some photos/videos from one of the players who transferred to WSU and was blown away. Definitely has turned her head. I don’t love it, but it’s the way of the game these days.

Plus she heard the players that left UM were asked to return all their training gear or pay for it? I get the expensive/reusable stuff like sideline jackets and uniforms, but the training shirts, shorts, etc they’ve been wearing all season? That’s next-level cheap (or just petty).

Whoever the new coach is, I hope they have it in them to also fight for some fairness and equity for their players and program.

That’s crazy I didn’t hear about returning equipment?!

UM should be lucky the girls don’t sue like Oregon, Florida, etc! The past couple years women athletes have sued their schools because they didn’t comply with Title IX.

I toured the Lady Griz locker room project on Tuesday. It is going to be a great facility. But completion has been pushed into February. No fixtures installed yet, nor flooring. Lockers should be installed next week. Once completed, work will start to upgrade the old LG locker room to be used by Volleyball.

The WAG floor will be replaced with a new floor, not just resurfaced. This will be done at the same time a basketball floor is installed in the East Gym.

Is your daughter still in contact with any of the players that went to WSU?
