cherry v. dellavedova

for any of you who've watched the nba rookie league games, you know how much the announcers love matthew dellavedova out of st. mary's via australia. i do too; i saw many of his college games on tv, including some epic battles against gonzaga. the kid can shoot. he's a tenacious defender. plays hard. undrafted out college, he won a spot on the cavalier roster by having the same kind of impressive run in las vegas that cherry is having this year. and it's understood: unless there are contract issues, dellavedova is the backup to kyrie irving. cherry is a longshot to make the team.

alright. but let's look at some numbers here, over three games.

points: dellavedova 39, cherry 34. but since dellavedova has played 97 minutes to 63 for cherry, it means cherry is scoring a point every 1.87 minutes, versus 2.48 minutes for dellavedova.

shooting percentage: from the field, dellavdova has shot a combined ten of 23, or 43.4%; cherry, 14 of 25 for 56%. from three, dellavedova is 3 of 11 for 27%, cherry three of eight for 37.5%

free throws: strong advantage to dellavedova, 12 of 15 for 80%; will 3 of 6, 50%.

rebounds: dellavedova 14, will 12. but per minute: dellavedova one every seven minutes, will one every five minutes.

assists: dellavedova 14, will 6. per minute: dellavedova one every seven minutes, will one every 10.5 minutes....BUT

trunovers: dellavedova 12, will one. assist to turnover ration: dellavedova 1.17 to one; will, six to one. a good assist to turnover ratio is three to one; chris paul is close to four. 1.17 for dellavedova is terrible; will is off the charts. okay, dellavedova has more time in which to make a turnover: for him, one turnover every eight minutes; will one for every 63 minutes!

see why cherry is turning heads in las vegas?

Don't need to sell me on Cherry. I was sold after seeing him live in as a Freshman in college. I believe he will make fall camp for some NBA team. I'd like to see him in Chicago, LA Lakers, Denver Nuggets (my 3 favorite NBA teams), or Miami (they are not deep at PG) LA Lakers, or Denver.

Cherry impacts defensively more than Dellavedova as well. Cherry gets to the ball and shooters quicker. Will is contesting something almost every trip down court. Dellavedova plays great ball defense but struggles off the ball, compared to Cherry. Will's defensive instincts are even above average for NBA PG's. Will has also done surprisingly well at both ends of the court at SG when the Cavs have gone small.

Cherry would be a good fit with the Portland Trailblazers as well, especially as a defensive specialist off the bench. Though the Blazers have two bench reserves with offensive skills, not a single backup guard has the ability (or the inclination) to play defense.

I think Will's defense & solid decisions on offense are the main reasons his plus-minus stats have been good...even when his shot isn't falling.

He's already shown he's a gamer & can play at that level. For the rest of summer league if he can show scoring consistency (& he doesn't need to hit a bunch of 3's) with about 10 points per game, along with the D & plus-minus stats, I think his chances are very good for an NBA team.

Even with his shot not falling last game it said a lot to me that he was one of the 5 on the floor at the end of the game when Cleveland needed to close things out. The coach obviously trusted him to help stop the bleeding when their lead was falling apart.

my thought too, especially with lilliard so familiar with cherry, and so talking him up in las vegas.

Watching Will eat Weber State's lunch in the conference tournament was en especially satisfying experience. I think he earned Lillard's respect.

In the Cleveland/SA game, Walt Frazier compared Will directly TO Lilliard.... :thumb: :thumb: as "another of those "Oakland" guards...Frazier was very impressed and flat out said "Will Cherry will be on an NBA roster this year."

I think Will can make a roster, just not Cleveland

i agree. i'm hoping for cleveland because of all the incredible publicity the cavs are going to get this year. but that will only possibly happen if dellavedova goes to minnesota. and if ray allen comes aboard, they won't have any roster openings, or cap space.

too, i looked up dellavedova's turnover rate for last year, to see if he was as bad as he was in las vegas. nope. his assist to turnover ration was about three to one, which is fine for a point guard.

another possibility: charlotte. i think one of the charlotte coaches was will's coach in canton, and he's offered many compliments not only on will's game, but his personality and coachability.
