Is anyone else as excited about these three new signees as I am? Don't get me wrong, I am big into seeing them in competition here at UM before I start laying on "too much" praise, but good lord...they appear to be future big-time BSC players--that could eventually mean an NCAA win or two come March Madness...especially with the signees from the previous couple of years...Digs, Stockton, Ward, Selvig, ect.) Just a hunch, but I'm big on Ward. I'm just saying that Tinkle is recruiting like a machine! A high-octane, winning machine that is. Kudos to him and his staff, in my opinion.

Cherry averaged 12.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and a league-leading 4.0 steals a game last season for the undefeated (33-0) Warriors, who finished the season ranked eighth in the nation.

Last year McClymonds upset 30-3 Dominguez High School 73-54 to win the C.I.F. Division I state championship in California. In the title game Cherry scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.

"He is a very athletic guard who can really go from end-to-end, and he can get into the paint and cause some havoc, and he also plays relentless defense," Tinkle said. "He is another kid who comes from a high school program that is historically very successful. He is a proven winner. We are very excited to add Will to our program, and his signing, along with our other two high school recruits, will pay benefits for us in the future."

ESPN’s Basketball Recruiting (July 2008) site said about Cherry, who was also recruited by Santa Clara, USF, and St. Mary’s: "Cherry plays at a relentless pace and is a tenacious defender as well."

Hutchison averaged 10.3 points and 8.7 rebounds last year as a junior and shot 58 percent from the field and 72% from the line. He was a first team all-state selection.

"We are very excited to have Eric join our program," said Tinkle. "We identified him a couple of years ago in the recruiting process as our kind of post player. He is a big guy with athleticism. What I really like about him is his motor. For a big man he really plays with a lot of emotion and intensity. He comes from an outstanding high school program at Mark Morris, and we know he has been taught great fundamentals. I think he will remind people of some of our good post players from the past."

Some of the things that ESPN’s Basketball Recruiting web site (May, 2008) had on its site about Hutchison: "He has great hands, quick feet and can finish in transition. Hutchison can add to his game by utilizing the jump-stop and developing a midrange jump shot, but overall he is one of the top 10 post prospects on the West Coast."

Last season Woods averaged 12.0 points and 8.0 rebounds for a 30-3 Dominguez Hills team which was ranked 11th in the country, and lost in the C.I.F. championship game.

Woods said he chose the Griz over a host of schools that included Montana State, Fresno State, Cal State Northridge, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Oregon State, Stanford, Columbia, UMass and Boston University.

"We are equally as excited to have somebody with Thurman’s athleticism and skill to join our program," Tinkle said. "He comes from one of the top high school programs in the nation. When we were initially recruiting him we thought he might be a notch above, as far as a player who we could get, but he fell in love with Missoula and felt like it would be the best place for him. He will really add a high level of athleticism to our wing position."

Said ESPN’s Basketball Recruiting web site about Woods: "If Woods continues to develop his game, particularly his ball-handling, he’ll be reminiscent of former UCLA standout Charles O’Bannon."

I agree that -- at least on paper -- Tinks has scored some major coups in recruiting. If the guys develop, Montana has a chance to be very, very good.

Thought I saw in the Missoulian that Woods will not play for the Griz next season and will attend a JC in CA. Anyone else have the word on that? I watched him at Griz camp this summer and he impressed me with good mid range jumper and some hops. I doubt he'd have contributed much his first year but looked like a player that could have helped the Griz. He must have not cleared academics or decided to stay closer to home.

Not much news on the BB front these days.

Thurman Woods left replaced by Raason Young, 6' 6' forward.

Nyandigisi Moikobu also left and has not been replaced.

Or maybe Moikobu was replaced and Woods hasn't been. either way, Griz will have one more scholarship to use for 2010.

Here is the link to Woods and Moikobu leaving.

Moikobu, a 6-foot-6 forward from Seattle, has transferred to a junior college in Arizona, Tinkle said. Woods, who faced eligibility problems from the NCAA Clearinghouse, has enrolled in a junior college in California, closer to his home in Compton.

Moikobu sat out last season as a redshirt.

"With (Moikobu) it was just a situation where we had raised the bar in what we expected in the classroom and dedication to the team," Tinkle said. "He's a great kid. Our interest was getting him to a level where he can succeed. Hopefully, he can go there and get that fire back in his belly for the game of basketball."

Woods, a 6-5 wing, signed with the Griz last November.

"We knew the process was going to take a while and he got a little impatient and worried about his future," Tinkle said of Woods. "I think things could have gone in his favor if we rode it out, but he didn't get that feeling. Everything was on good terms and we said we'll watch him and maybe re-recruit him."

The Griz filled one of the two vacated scholarships with junior college transfer Raason Young, a 6-6 forward from Hagerstown (Md.) Community College who signed last month. Tinkle said he'd leave the remaining scholarship open to be used for the 2010 recruiting class.
