Montana’s Will Cherry has been selected as the Big Sky Conference men’s basketball player of the week after leading his team to a 2-1 record, including a road victory over UCLA.

Cherry, a 6-foot-1, 177-pound sophomore guard from West Oakland, Calif., averaged 19 points, 5.7 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 3.7 steals per game as the Grizzlies earned wins over Cal State Fullerton and UCLA, and lost by four to Portland.

Cherry started the barrage last Tuesday, tying a career-high with 24 points, seven steals, seven rebounds and five assists in a 75-67 home win over Cal State Fullerton.

Cherry scored 15 points with seven assists, three steals and three rebounds on Saturday in a 58-54 home loss to Portland.

Against UCLA on Sunday at Pauley Pavilion, Cherry scored a team-high 18 points with five assists, two rebounds and a steal. Cherry made 7-of-11 shots from the floor. It was Montana’s first ever win over UCLA, and marked the first time a Big Sky team beat the Bruins in Los Angeles since 2000.

Cherry leads the Big Sky and ranks sixth in the nation in steals per game at 3.3 This is Cherry’s second player of the week honor in three weeks.

Not quite AJ numbers yet, but the kid is only a sophmore ;)

We might FINALLY have a Big Sky MVP on our hands.
