After a *much needed* week one bye week, the Grizzlies are finally back at it this coming Saturday evening as they host the D2 Central Washington Wildcats. Last year Central Washington went 8-4 and had a little playoff run, this year they were voted to finish 2nd in their conference and had 4 first place votes as well. Per their conference press release they’ve got an OL and DB on the first team all conference and much like Montana they’re replacing a lot of starters from last year’s team. Central Washington returns just 4 starters on offense and 4 starters on defense. CWU did add some transfers this year to fill their ranks, 13 total, blending from some JuCo’s, Washington, Washington State, and Idaho.

We’ll see a familiar face with CWU as well, “Icy” Mike Ferriter, former Griz WR and assistant under Bob Stitt. He’s the OC/QBs coach for CWU.

Central Washington Wildcats: 1-0

41-14 win vs Colorado Mesa – The game started slow, just a 7-0 lead for CWU at the half, Mesa had 3 long/slow drives that all ended with punts that chewed a ton of clock. In the 2nd half CWU found their stride, 4 TD drives in a row and all fairly quickly with 3 of the 4 id just about under 3:00 of total TOP – two of their TDs in the drive were a 55 yard TD pass and a 66 yard TD pass. CWU dominated the box score, 292 rushing, 224 passing – outgaining Mesa 516 yards to 303 yards. CWU was just 9-14 passing on those 224 yards.

General Stats (Using last years stats)

As you can see, I'm trying something new here, took some work with ChatGPT to create a more visual look. CWU's 2024 stats give them a slight edge over Montana's 2024 stats. Obviously we have to consider competition but this generally shows that CWU has a very strong and efficient offense and last year a really stout defense

Central Washington Players to Watch:

#17 Kennedy McGill, QB: McGill is a true dual-threat style QB, he’s been a starter since 2023. Last year he passed for 1724 yards, 15 TDs / 5 Ints and he rushed for 1206 yards and 12 TDs. He’s a dangerous dude. In their first game this year he lead the team in rushing with 135 yards, 2 TDs and he passed for 200 yards and 2 more TDs. He’s listed at 6 foot tall, 180 pounds. This kid a baller, he’s a great runner / scrambler but keeps his eyes down the field and is accurate when on the run. I’m seeing lots of Tommy Mellot in his highlights.

#1 Mason Juergens, WR: A Wazzu transfer, the 6-2, 200 pound WR had 75 receiving yards and 1 TD in CWU’s opening game.

#6 Ryder Bumgarner, RB: I see a different RB, #5 Justice Taylor, was listed as the starter, but Bumgarner finished with more yards. He’s a transfer from Washington, listed at 5-9, 195 pounds. He had 52 yards and a TD last week. Looks like we’ll see Taylor plenty too, he’s a little bigger of a back at 6-1, 195.

#2 Jalen Grable, WR: A 6-3 WR transfer from Idaho, he had a 51 yard TD score last week.

#54 Slade Edwards, C: Yes I’m listing their center, a 4 year starter, the 6-2, 290 pound center has been an all conference player for year and has made elite 100 lists. He’s an excellent lineman and is one of the key reasons for CWU’s ongoing success on offense.

#44 Chase Coalson, DB: Also a 1st team all conference player, he had 49 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and 1.5 PBU’s last year. This season in their opening game he lead the team with 6 tackles, 2 PBU’s.

#97 Edward Mikaio, DL: Looks like CWU runs a 3-4 and has two guys on the line that are bigger dudes. Mikaio is listed at 6-1, 280, he had 1.5 sacks last week.

#13 King Williams: A safety transfer from Washington State, he had 9 tackles in last week’s game.

Keys to a Grizzly victory
  • Ground Control – We’ve got a new look Grizzly OL that’ll be facing off against a CWU D-line that goes 280, 290, and 250 in weight. They’ll face some issues up against a 3-man front (good thing they’ve got practice in against it) and will need to control the LOS to help Gillman / Rocker / Fonoti get free.
  • Don’t let McGill get loose – This kid worries me, he’s a baller and does it all. The CWU offense really centers around him too. Even in their 4 losses last year, McGill ran for over 100 yards in each. He’s really hard to keep under wraps. He’s going to be one of the more athletic QBs the Griz will see and if they aren’t careful he will burn them deep with shots to some of these tall transfer WRs.
  • Keep everything in front of you – Our secondary is going to probably have to concede some yards and occasional big catches but that would be better than getting beat deep. The design of this run offense is going to test our DBs to stay home and make sure they don’t go from giving up a 10 yard run to a 50 yard TD bomb.
  • Special Teams showcase – I think we could see some real good stuff from Wortham and Deck on Saturday. This ST unit will have a lot of veteran players and that could be where Montana could really flex on CWU with some solid blocking opening up big return lanes.
  • +2 or better – Griz will be jittery in their first game but hopefully won’t play dumb and lose more turnovers than gained. Making sure we’re on the right side of this margin is going to really help the outcome.
  • Building defensive trust – Saturday 11 brand new starters for the defense will take the field. As we saw this week around the FCS they’re going to have only tougher tests ahead and they need to get on the same page right away. For the most part these guys have practiced together since spring ball, but they’ve not played a game against an opponent. Now starts that phase of making sure they’re all together, know what each other is doing, and hopefully minimizing miscommunications and errors (like the ones that plagued our defense last year).
  • Ah Yat needs to settle in – I’m assuming he’s QB1 and we’ve seen some up and down from the kid. If he’s our guy, he needs to play like it. I think the running game will help him in a major way but he’s going to have times where moving the sticks will rely upon his arm and his reads. If the Ah Yat era is truly here to get going he can’t have a lackluster game. I don’t expect perfection, but I want to see that he’s our guy.
----------------------
We very well could have a sloppy/choppy start. This is usually the crux of opening games, meanwhile CWU has a game under their belt so they could open up and push us a bit while the Griz get locked in. I kind of see this being a little nerve wracking maybe through the whole first half, a few 3 and outs, and maybe a couple of big plays by CWU as well. As the game gets rolling though, so will Montana. A close game at half stretches out a bit and it’s a win – but one that has fans a little worried.

I’ll say Griz win this 38-17.

Go Griz!
My apologies Brint! Scrolled through the threads earlier but obviously didn't do a thorough enough search. It's what happens when you been absent from egriz for awhile. ARRGHH! Gotta get back up to speed STAT!

Great write up, it takes time to do this. Thank you! It appears they have some talent, hope we can contain it. I too have questions about Ah Yat. He's got a year under his belt we'll see how much improvement there is. I'm also thinking we will come out on top. 28-7 the good guys!

The only reason the Griz would be under 40 is they're pulling people early in preparation for the North Dakota game.

Lots of predictions that the Griz will win 40 or 50 something to a talented CWa’s single digits….
Lots of new players
Too much Koolaid..

Great write-up! Quick tip: I use AI for work a lot, and if you want to avoid arguing with ChatGPT over images, try one of these methods:

Use OpenArt on a desktop.

Or, put all your stat details into a ChatGPT prompt and literally ask it to write you a polished image prompt from that information.

Both approaches save major time.

Go GRIZ!

I'm personally one of those Kool-aid drinkers, and inspite of all the new players, I think this team will excel. Lots of talent added this year, and I trust the coaches will get them there.
