Central Ty Gregorak discussion thread

Couple things. In the short term this hurts the Griz way more than helps the Cats IMHO. Ty is good, the players loved him, but, unless he is finding extra years of eligibility for Holmes, KVA, Kose, Whitted, Lebsock and Critt and taking them to Bozeman with him, no, MSU didn't just instantly get better. They need better players. PERIOD. Long term, because Ty is apparently content with being a coordinator in the FCS, yes MSU's defense got a lot, lot better.

Second, No, MSU fans, no matter how bad you want to believe it, Jesse Sims isn't transferring with him.

I think we all knew TG was leaving, but I didn't think this would happen honestly. I actually said to a friend of mine that when Choate was hired, and I knew him and TG were friends, that I hope this didn't happen. But I never thought it actually would for real lol.

Wow, this is kind of Huge, unexpected news. The Bobcats instantly get better on D and this does hurt the Griz, I don't care how you spin it, this hurts the Griz.
I agree.
Really??? You were that impressed with Ty, huh??? Good guy, related well with the players and good motivator, but not at all a spectacular scheme guy by any notion.
Root Sports Play analyst, Taylor Barton, surely a neutral but informed observer, termed Gregorak's defenses as "masterful," -- a great deal of respect for the guy.

The masterful defense against EWU and MSU.....well....wasn't exactly his game plan....

You would think we would loose a kid or two that was loyal to Ty, or a potential recruit. We shall know soon enough.

 you'll get over it Caleb. Pull up your big girl panties...
Says the guy who's apparently butthurt over a tweet from a college kid.

Oh, I'm not butthurt over anything a 20-something college kids says. He'll just regret saying that (if he hasn't already deleted it). He was much better than that in high school... what happened?

Have to agree with your response GG75 - we have no reference to see if the next DC is better/worse/same at this point. I'm going to miss Ty and his passion - which is near impossible to replace, but it's not like he's the only DC out there that can get the job done.

Really??? You were that impressed with Ty, huh??? Good guy, related well with the players and good motivator, but not at all a spectacular scheme guy by any notion. Drove me and a lot of fans nuts at times with his vulnerability on first drives, 3rd and longs, and trick plays. Poly had his # every year. And I don't know how you can argue against the talent we've had on D the last few years. Solid coach, not a irreplaceable by any means.

Who are you trying to kid? The Griz have had great defenses in the last several years, particularly in light of losing JJ and the whole "scandal phase." The defense was one of the main, if not primary, reasons you contended the last couple of years. Leaders in sacks, TFL's, RZ defense, NFL recruits, beat NDSU, beat App State. Several other huge wins that I can't remember. You guys are kidding yourselves if you think Ty was anything but STELLAR with the Griz defense. -Not Smack-

3 out of the last 5 years, Ty's "STELLAR" D wasn't even in the top 50 defenses in the country. Explain to me how this amounts to stellar given the amount of NFL level talent he's had over his tenure?

Whatever.

I know nothing of the specifics of the situation but if any of the comments on here are accurate then it is reasonable to assume some of the following may have prompted this change;

A) As a new coach Stitt was obligated to retain Ty for some continuity. He may want his own guy.
B) If there was tension (likely) then each may have been wanting a change anyway.
C) Ty's wife just got a job in Bozeman. This could explain his jumping over to little brother.
D) Coach Choate needs huge instant help. Finding a decent D coach with Big Sky experience is huge.
E) Despite the talk, Choate doesn't have MT connections (beyond playing at Western). Ty does.
F) Cat's defense was worst in the nation. IF TY DOES ANYTHING HE WILL LOOK GOLDEN.
G) Ty probably got a pay raise and a great resume builder showing he can turn a defense around.

Gregorak did a good job in Missoula and always had a decent defense. On the other hand he also had some exceptional talent. With this he consistently fielded a good defense but not a great one. I hope he does well in Bozeman. I expect he will make their D respectable again. This will help him if he wants to climb the coaching ladder.

Ty is a good coach and I'm sorry to see him go, especially to Bozeman. Yet as I began this post, "Whatever".
I think what I'll miss most is the guy's passion on the sidelines. I'm confident we will find another defensive coordinator who can take the talent on the Grizzlies sideline and field a solid defense.

I like your post other than that part. Not true. Has connections from Sidney to Kalispell and everywhere in between. Know that for a fact. Also, helped recruited Matt Miller to Boise State and Will Dissly to the Huskies. Knows the state well.

Not as well as ty...I believe was the point. Which is undoubtedly true.

As it is written, it has nothing to do with TG - just a jab at Choate. But regardless of how you interpret- now the Cats have both who have co next ions in Montana.
I can only imagine the damage that Coach Choate and Coach Gregorak would inflict on an all you can eat buffet. Far less I'm afraid on the other teams in the BSC.

***Update: As a preventative measure, Stromboli's Pizza just announced on their Facebook page that they would no longer be offering the "Hump Day Pizza Buffet." The owner's refused further comment.

I talked to a kid today who was/is being recruited....he dealt with TY. And he had no clue Ty quit. Does it impact recruiting? Does it make a kid's mind have doubt? Yes

Yep. We don't care where they came from. If he inspires players and recruits at MSU like he did at UM, our recruiting should improve.

I dunno enough about the process to judge whether ty was good or not. One thing I do know though, is that in the last 10 ish years we have produced some amazing talent on defense. Was it wasted? Possibly. But look at the defensive players we've had on defense the last decade... Murphy, biermann, wagenmann, Holmes, Campbell, Tripp, coyle, VA, tru, tuff, Colt, shann, Wilson. I mean... I'm sure I forgot some but we have produced probably more defensive players in the nfl than any other fcs program in the last 10 years. Now how much does ty have to do with those guys' development? I dunno but I guess we will find out. I don't think this is as bad as everyone might be thinking.

There are 125 FCS teams. In terms of %, these are all above 50% which is pretty damn good, ex '12. Anyway, you don't have to be in the op 10% to win a lot and go to playoffs. With your "less than stellar" definition, you made it to 3-4 playoff runs, one in the semi's. Good god. You guys $hit where you eat.

My verdict is still out on Stitt. Ty was well liked by the players. Stitt may really be hurting our recruiting by axing students on schollies and getting rid of popular coaches. Yes, you can argue he is giving the money to other players, who may be "better". But if I am FCS recruit, and I have to decide between two++ schools offering me a scholarship, I would probably take the safer school where I don't have to worry that my scholarship is going to be cut. Stitt's reputation of not being very warm with players may also hurt potential recruits. Now he is getting rid of a popular coach who helped them have a winning season. Not sure this is the best idea even if Ty probably wanted to move to be near his wife. I think Stitt needs to realize he can be a kind leader and still respected.

Or how programs are run and scholarships doled out. Every school evaluates scholarship athletes every season. Nothing is guaranteed to anyone.

Meh, it's a business... I'm upset about it but I'll get over it. Breske coaches at Idaho who was/is an equally bitter rival and it doesn't phase me that much. Ty was a great guy for the program and I hope he does well... except when he coaches against the Griz.
