A team needs to convert on third down and keep the ball more so that a punter does become irrelevant. In 2019, we had an awesome punter, but he did not need to kick nearly as much as we have seen in the last couple of years. Our offense has given the ball back far too much in 2021 and 2022. . .no doubt.
Why do you guys just make things up? We have stats. We can check these things. This entire board lately has been just saying whatever they want based on nothing but their personal feelings.
Here are the stats you mentioned since Bobby came back.
2018 - 61 punts @ 5.54 punts per game, 40% 3rd down conversions
2019 - 65 punts @ 4.64 punts per game, 46.7% 3rd down conversions
2021 - 70 punts @ 5.38 punts per game, 36.7% 3rd down conversions
2022 - 48 punts @ 3.69 punts per game, 46.2% 3rd down conversions
3.69 punts per game is literally the lowest amount of punts per game we've ever had (since the stats go back to 2003). Roughly the same 3rd down percentage as in 2019.
Also, punter recognition is largely based on percentages and average punt length. Number of punts has nothing to do with it.
Like, come on. I don't want to have to be this guy, but it's just wild.
Looking at these stats is amazing. Another thing that someone posted in another thread was that we ranked like 7th & 8th in rushing/passing offense in the BSC, yet somehow ranked tops in defense and 3rd in scoring offense. If there was ever a reason to focus on why we "sucked" offensively, here is the answer; our punter flat-out put our defense in a great position to stuff the opponents' offense, force them to punt deep in their own territory, which in turn led to short scoring drives. I think one could argue Rohrback could be considered one of the MVP's of the season.
