Absolutley. There is a reason they are only one year commitment. Coach may change his mind and drop or decrease the scholarship based on how the player fits with the team. Kid should have the same right.

Except for some of the very top players, who want to play and show their stuff, I don't know why players wouldn't stay at their schools. There, they have many of the best friends of their lives. Again, the girls. Contacts for life. A place they will want to come back to for Homecoming and more over the years.

Where does the Montana kid, who went to a bunch of schools including UM, come to reunions at?

Seems short-sighted to me to move on to another school for football, again, except for some top players who may have a shot at the NFL and need to show their stuff.

I am wholeheartedly in favor of the portal. They should have as much latitude as the coaches. I am shocked that as a former player you don't see that. The NCAA has taken advantage of players for years.
You played at an ivy league school when they were at the top of div I football. It was arguably a more competitive environment than even today and you are not standing up for the players over these coaches that are making millions? Buddy!!!!

Say what you want but I don't think turning over half your roster every year due to this Transfer Portal is going to be a good thing for college football. With the number of kids countrywide that have signed on to the Portal and increasing rapidly every day, this could happen. Yes, changes to transfer rules are needed but this goes to far. Would be interested in hearing Bobby's take on the Portal. I would bet it is not at all different than Choate.

While the current 3-0 cat streak is troubling to Griz Nation, realize that the cat's longest such streak in the history of the rivalry is something like 8-0 while the Griz have had many longer streaks topped by the famed 16-0 one. PR, you didn't play in an era where the stars of the team were treated as Gods and acted like absolute prima donnas. They're told from the time they're 6-7 years old that their shit doesn't stink, they can do no wrong, and the rules don't apply to them. They start on both sides of the ball in HS and play 50-60 minutes a game...They're all conference, all state, all American, all world, etc., etc...then when reality hits them in the face in college when they're surrounded by 100 other guys who ALL had the same experience in HS, but only 22 of them can get out on the field as starters, many of these kids from the "everybody gets a trophy" generation can't handle it. So they continue to seek out a situation where they can again be BMOC. They are VERY short-sighted and they'll regret it in the end...It's a brave new world....

There's a very simple response, from a parental perspective, to all the Group of 5 and FCS coaches whining about the Transfer Portal: Full Cost of Attendance and the Stipends to all athletes. I would assume neither North Dakota school is seeing much movement by their student-athletes jumping at the chance to see a more secure future.

Sure there are probably a lot of kids like that. But there were a lot of kids like that when I was in school in the 90's. And probably any other decade you want to choose.

I know my kids are very hard workers. And not entitled. And most all of the kids they hang out with are the same way. Guess it just depends on how they're brought up which I assume has been the case since the beginning of time.

I like the portal to a point. I like that kids have options. I don't see a future where 50% of rosters change from season to season. If that actually comes to fruition I would agree that would be a bad thing.

I was surprised to hear just how easy it is to enter the portal and that a player could do it without even notifying their coach. I don't like that aspect. I'm fine with players having options. But you're making decisions that affect not just yourself, but your teammates and coaches. I think it should not be a decison to take lightly. I would like to see a meeting with the head coach and position coach as mandatory. Have this meeting, fill out the proper paperwork and by all means do what you think is best for yourself and ideally your education. But to just be able to up and leave without any discussion seems odd to me.

It will be very interesting to see how this changes the landscape of college football, especially within our fcs division.

Yes, only the best got playing time. Many retired over time. Some stayed on team for 4 years, despite getting almost no playing time. Don't recall anyone who transferred to play somewhere else. Don't think many from my school transfer to play elsewhere even now. Can't imagine the portal will impact my school much. Also, note that no one in the Ivies has athletic scholarships. A few players transfer to my school now to play, but not many.

Most got a terrific education, made many friends, and gained many contacts. Many went to med school, law school or business school. Most became very successful in life.

It's possible that where I played was more important to your question, than when I played.

One of my teammates was a Rhodes Scholar. One just went off as chair of the board of the College Football Hall of Fame. Almost all of my teammates greatly appreciated the fun we had and what we learned from football. Football was more important in my life, and growth, than I realized at the time.

CDA, do you really think young kids just out of high school are mentally ready to make a decision to quit because they run into something they don't like? Example, a SoCal kid comes to a school in Montana and there is a two week real cold snap with a lot of snow, so he says I am leaving for warmer weather. This is a kid most likely on a full schollie. You think that is okay to quit so easily? With the Portal, the kid doesn't need to tell anyone he is thinking of leaving. The Coaches find out after the fact in an email.

With over 5500 players already signed on and growing rapidly every day, all schools are going to be impacted greatly including MSU and UM. It is going to have an impact on all schools recruiting strategy. Before this year is over, I bet you will see some UM players transferring as a result of the Portal. It is going to be interesting. I think you will see it impact more, those teams that have a lot of depth.

Stop traffic. I think if an adult wants to transfer, he should transfer. I don't view that as quitting. I view it as wanting to play somewhere else. Bummer if MSU is on the losing end of it.

The Portal is quitting made easy. If you think that is good so be it. Personally, I do not think quitting is a good thing for anyone. When you make a commitment, you stick to it. Yes, there are situations like a coaching change or family situation that is okay. MSU is not on the losing end of it. They are fine so far as they have good depth. But the future does not look good for all including UM. Someone should ask Bobby how he feels about it. I think he would totally disagree with you CDA.

I think vim has done some breakdowns on your recruiting classes for the past five years or more on how many guys finished their careers. A kid has been able to transfer anytime he’s wanted to prior to the TP , not a big deal now maybe five years down the road will tell a different story. If Choate doesn’t like it he should never check the TP or accept any transfers that are on the TP .
