Cats hire new OC

The real question for me is about the head coach. Either he is turning down offers from FBS schools (best case scenario for scat fans) or he is not getting any offers from FBS Schools. If the latter of the two is true - you have to ask why? Are the scats stuck with a coach who is mediocre? He has won more games than any other coach in MSpew history and he has made the playoffs a few times as of late. He just can't win big games. He has seen success against his in state rival (largely due to coaching changes and self inflicted chaos by the Griz) so he deserves credit for turning the program around. I just see him as vanilla and oatmeal and the chances of a NC are remote with him at the helm. Say what you want about the Griz having a tough year in 2012 - they will be back on track soon enough and they will also have a new HC. One that probably won't last more than three years because he will have a better job offer. Sadly that is the sign of a successful program anymore. You can keep Big game Rob in Bozo forever. Suits me just fine.

Ash spent 20 yrs. at Drake in his native Iowa. He has never been one to jump around. He likes Bozeman and he is also nearing retirement age. Some people value quality of life. Mike VanDeist at Carroll I think is the same type of guy. I am sure he is not staying at Carroll because he is a mediocre coach. He has had other offers but chooses to stay at Carroll because he likes it. Ash's record of success speaks for itself.

Yes. Yes it does. I think that's kind of our point.

  Exactly! Some people value quality of life. This is what you want in your head football coach? In this day and age I don't think many programs are looking for someone who values quality of life. Is it a factor in every coaches decision? Probably, but for top coaches this is very low down on the list.

I look for a coach who runs a clean program and wins. Ash fits the bill in both of those categories.,

Could not agree with you more. He just does not win big games. Seems like a circular argument here that goes back to my original post.

Only one coach can win the BIG game each year, that is the NC. Does that make every other coach a loser? I don't think so. If that is the only criteria for a coach to be successful, then 99% of the coaches in collage football are losers. When fans start to think that a NC HAS to be the end result you will see programs get in trouble. Any programs come to mind griz fans?

Same was said about hauck. I bet there are more than a few on here who take him back.

A fair question I suppose and only time can yield an answer. Ash came into a hornets nest which included limited practice time and reduced scholarships, and his been slowly and patiently building a nationally prominent program ever since. His number of wins has increased in each year he's been in Bozeman and I see that trend continuing through at least the 2013 season, and our end of season ranking has also improved each year. Thus until we take a step backwards without winning an NC, it's premature to say he "can't win a national championship". Ash's story in Bozeman is still being written, and if I were a betting man, my money would be on Ash finishing his career in Bozeman.

Unfortunately for all of us, it's going to be "the right to get your asses kicked by North Dakota State" for the next few years

There is a difference between criticizing a coach for being comfortable and vanilla, and criticizing him for not winning championships. This year was the only year the Cats have been seriously considered a favorite to possibly win it all. They looked mediocre in one win, and got beat down again without sniffing even a shot at the championship. Ash is a good thing for the Griz. Yeah he will win quite a few games, and he may someday win more than one game in the playoffs. But he has proven that he is not a big game head coach. We are not saying he has to win a championship every few years to be successful, we are saying that he is too comfortable with being 10-2 and being one and done in the playoffs

Point taken. Still the direction that the Cats have gone in the time Ash has been here is positive and for a long time Cat fan I like what I see. Am I content with where the Cats are at, NO but the direction we are going is positive. Lets face it, the Cats have not had a coach like Ash for a long time and for now we will continue to enjoy our 10-2 seasons, beats the hell out do 5-6.

Big Game Bob?

Being the 19th winningest coach in history at all levels does not indicate a coach that is not driven or vanilla. He has improved the Cat program steadily each year both record wise and especially recruiting wise. He is on his way to another very strong recruiting year which addresses the weaknesses we had last year. So the program is still getting stronger. Yes, I would like us to go all the way to the NC and I think it will come. I will take the 10-2 record too. Like someone mentioned it sure beats 5-6.

I agree that a 5-6 season left a bad taste in Griz fans mouths but the only question I have is how did cat fans live with it for 16 years? The only thing I will admit is the cats have won the right to gloat in 2012 and thats it. Nothing more. One thing to keep in mind it wasn't a ash led cats team that brought down the Griz in 2012 but an inept president, and a woman.

If would think you Griz fans would more worried about your own coaches than the Bobcat head coach. Ash is doing just fine in building a stronger team each year. You have a head coach coming off a losing season and just one year left and the future unknown.

I guess the reverse could also hold true as to why you are so concerned about a basic question pertaining to your coach not winning big games? Did we hit a nerve possibly? I know there are plenty of people who have voiced concern over our coaches and countless threads have been dedicated to the Griz coaching staff. Don't get your panties in a bunch because your coach is being scrutinized. You should be happy - for once the scats have been winning. You deal with success as well as you deal with losing - very poorly.
