As a Niner fan, I had to go through half a season of Blaine Gabbert throwing 4-yard passes on 3rd and 8.

It's infuriating, but it happens all the time.

I also love how people act like the defense doesn't know where the sticks are, too.
Bingo!

So the question becomes: Why design a play that somehow doesn't account for what the defense is bound to know? The QB can pad is completion stats, but it doesn't accomplish anything for the team.
My point was that in that situation Washington isn't going to give up anything at or past the sticks, so you either take the shorter throw and hope your guy can will his way to a first, or force a throw into coverage, because I don't remember Phillips having all day to wait for guys to come open.
All good points, of course.

Sorry I didn't make my point clear. I was not addressing the specific issue of Griz receivers (not being able)/(having no time) to get open against a superior defense. My comment was really meant for the pro situation where, presumably, the talent level is more even ... yet receivers still fail to go deep enough so a catch is good for a first down. And, as a long-suffering Niner fan myself (grew up near Marysville, CA), I feel your pain. :(

niner fan as well, hometown sf, lived in nevada city, ca. my sons played for nevada union (jefferson heildelberger)
