Cat running backs so far this season

Not sure there is a reasonable cat fan who would take Jones/Davis over Gillman. A good friend I play squash with who recently played for the cats admits as much. Any cat fan who is delusional enough to claim otherwise should watch the pregame press conference from the ISU coach for the MSU game. In his recap of playing the Griz, he made it a point to say Gillman was the best back in the FCS. Pretty sure that guy knows a little more about football than cat trolls.
I’d take Eli in a heartbeat. Not only is he damn good, but he is the FCS’s version of Barry Sanders with his on field attitude. He easily could play and play well at the FBS level, however, I also know for fact he is in love with Montana. That’s not to knock Davis/Jones, they are great too. Davis is extremely dangerous, if he was a step faster and not injury prone he’d be right up there.

You got Jones because he didn't like what was in front of him if he signed with Montana. Take the leftovers and talk about the sweet lemons you have. I'll take Gillman, Rocker, Fonoti over you whole running back room.

Maybe a part, but there are other reasons that Jones ended up in Bozeman.

We have a Jones….Hashim Jones, would be unfair to have 2😉

Not my running back room my man. Just giving a different perspective. I have been pretty clear on here that I am a Griz fan first.

There is an ass hat poster on Bobcat Nation who in 100% seriousness claimed Eli is overrated and not that good at football. Well iaafan there are probably 1000 college football experts who would vehemently disagree with you. How can anyone take a poster like that serious. I literally skip past anything he says now as he has zero credibility.

Who is the poster?

Tell me it was Tom Stuber without saying it was Tom Stuber.... lol

Ha! Nope. He knows Eli is a stud. It’s that iaafan over there. One of the most idiotic posts I’ve seen on a message board and that’s saying something.
Is this the post you're talking about? This was from back in July....doesn't see too off the rails for a July post.

Are there no teams in the BSC that are improved from last year? UM was fifth last year but they’re expected to be second this year? Are the players they’re bringing in really that good? Has Hauck proven to be good at getting transfers to play well? Is Gillman as good as everyone says? He had some great games against bad defenses but struggled a lot too last year. His performances against Poly and UNC were frankly awful. Is it just a bad OL or is he a little overrated? Something doesn’t add up.

The worst take I’ve ever seen on a message board. Look at the accolades Eli received during and after the previous season. There were a bunch of FBS teams after him offering bags of cash too. And this ass hat wants to ask if Eli is good? Now I’m questioning your ass-hat-ness as well!

As a Cat fan, I would say Eli is one of the top RB's in the FCS this year, if not the top. He is having a great year and is behind an improved offensive line. Jones and Davis are excellent RB's too but Eli is ahead of them.
For me it’s not even about comparing him to Jones or Davis or other backs. I would think any halfway educated football person could look at what he did as a freshman then as a sophomore and say “holy shit this dude is pretty damn good”. I mean look at this:

Freshman:
- Jerry Rice award winner
- first team freshman all American
- big sky freshman of the year
- 968 total yards on only 194 carries
- 12 rushing TDs

Sophomore:
- second team all big sky
- third team pre season all American
- 1014 yards on only 167 carries
- 15 rushing TDs
- 17 total TDs, fifth most in FCS

I mean this quite literally…..how could anyone…..anyone with football knowledge more than a watermelon…look at all that and ask “is he really that good?” Seriously the worst take on a message board I’ve ever seen. And now you have other idiot cats fans showing up here (looking at you wbtfg) saying “well doesn’t seem too bad of a take”. Holy. Shit.

I'm well aware Eli had a very good season and was named 2nd team all-conference, had 15 rushing touchdowns, and had some monster games against Western Co, PSU, and Tennessee St. And after the season, he received offers from multiple FBS schools.

I'm also aware he had some games where his rushing production was low SDSU (10 rushes, 12 yards), MSU (10 Rushes, 35 Yards), UC Davis (8 Rushes, 21 yards), UNCU (12 rushes, 39 yards).

Both of these things can be (and are) true.

I think IAA was posing the question of what was the reason for those low production games against good(ish) defenses. It's not terribly dissimilar from playerrep's questions about Adam Jones.

Personally, I think Gillman is a great back. He's for sure a 1st team all-conference guy, likely a top-5 (possibly higher) for the Payton award, and has a good shot for first team All-American.

I am hesitant to fault Eli for those performances. Two things can be true: (1) Eli is an elite running back. & (2) he runs behind a mediocre offensive line. Against decent defensive fronts, most of his big runs are due to him bouncing it and/or making multiple guys miss. Rarely have I seen (again, against legit competition) the offensive line get 2-3 yards of movement, reach the second level, and get him 1 v 1 on a safety.

Right. I think that was IAA’s question.

Last year was a lot like watching Adrian Peterson play for the Vikings. The offensive line was never great for Adrian. If you looked at his rushing averages per game, you would think that he was being very productive all day long. Reality is that he had a ton of rushes for negative yards or no gain, but would bust a couple of long ones to bump his average. Defenses were scared to death because they could do a great job of bottling him up and do everything right, but he would take the team on his back and do some all world shit. Eli is that type of back at this level. Some games will not be great, but he is going to inevitably hit home runs. Such a pleasure to watch.
