Carroll vs. Rocky on Thursday 8/23

It was a good and bad game to watch. RMC just was faster and executed much more efficiently. CC had time to pass a bunch on 3rd down and coverage was just too good. I also noticed DBs played the ball well, stayed on the hip and kept the shoulders in on the long passes. CC never had much going on.

Rocky's defense was great. Gave up 3 first downs in the first 3 quarters. Special teams were outstanding. Offense was ho-hum, none of the three QBs stood out. Had it not been for 2 timely interceptions that led to 2 TDs it would have been much closer.

The best story was the kicker who was drafted off the soccer team this week because of injuries and had never put on a football helmet. He had 2 FG and an extra point try. He scored 2 FG from 29 yards as well as the extra point. Nice to see those kinds of stories.

What's happened to Carroll's program?I remember in the early 2000's they used to be the dominant team in naia saw the beat dickinson and Mary pretty bad a couple of times.

Van Diest not retiring.

This was what I was going to ask....How is VanDeist the problem, people thought he would be the coach here for a while.

Is there a legit explanation other than this?

Also how did the Schwartz kid from Glendive look at WR?

In my opinion, I’ve questioned Carroll’s struggles in recent years ever since Van Diest’s odd behavior back in 2012 right before the season started. He told the team he was thinking about stepping down from the head coach position and did step away for a few days without much explanation in he middle of fall camp (if I remember correctly). Now there are probably other problems that have caused Carrol’s struggles, but in my opinion I think this is possibly a larger one.

I think Mike just might be losing steam. He’s 65 and this is his 19th season coaching.

Here's part of the answer to this puzzle: the rest of the conference has had to get better in order to keep up with Carroll...... and they have. Tech has been very competitive, and look at Rocky--- they have some horses and are going to be very competitive in the Frontier this year. Certainly Southern Oregon---national champs a few years ago, are competitive in a major way. College of Idaho is only in their third year of playing football and they are already very good, and recruiting from those small Idaho towns that Van Diest used to scour.

When Carroll had its run of national championships they had their pick of non-FSB recruits in about a four state area. Not any more.

Talking to my brother in law who is a high school coach in Montana, he says that Van Diest quit trying in Montana high schools years ago and figured he could get marginal talent from out of state that could excell in Helena. Heard he started thumbing his nose at small town Montana talent years ago.

I agree with your idea about other schools in the frontier stepping up. I think that is the major reason that cc is not as dominant as they used to be. Also they have not changed very much. They do the same thing they did when they were the big dog in town. Everyone else put them on a pedestal and that is where everyone wanted to be. And those programs made changes and now look at what has happened.

I don't think that's totally accurate. What i do think is, Carroll got lazy with MT high school kids. They wanted them, but it became more of an expectation that they would get them, and hence, they focused more recruiting efforts on Washington and Idaho, with the expectation that Carroll recruited itself as far as most MT kids were concerned.

Coach Van Diest hasn't lost any steam, he just focuses it differently. Six national championships have honed that capability. The answer to the question is that the conference has gotten stronger in all respects. The add in schools have been a big part of that but the traditional rivals are all strong.

The event a few years ago was MVD's reaction to some of his seniors letting him down. As always, he blames himself for any shortcoming in his program. Don't confuse character with a lack of commitment.
