Canyon River Golf Club

Usually true but averaged about 2.5 hours per 18 holes. You can really get around the club if you go at the right times.

If I'm coming from out of state, have a week or so to spend, and want the best golf/scenery experience, I'd play the courses around Flathead lake and take a day or two to go through Glacier Nat'l Park. As far as local Missoula goes, I like the Ranch Club the best.

Glacier is a must if you have time.

Has there ever been a day that the wind didn't blow at Old Works? Against you? On every hole?
 
Played Old Works a few weeks ago and it had snowed 11 inches two days before. We flipped a coin and ended up playing from the tips. There was absolutley zero roll on a tee ball and on the long par 5 I hit driver, 3 metal, chunked 7 wood, 9 iron long and then chipped in for an easy PAR!
I've played Old Works and MCC many times and my vote is hands down MCC. I think it's one of the greatest courses in the state. The North course at White Fish is pretty awesome as is Meadowlark and of course you can't ignore my home course, BILL ROBERTS, in Helena!
 
i guess i have been very lucky playing old works. of the 15-20 or so rounds i've played there i only recall a few where the wind was pretty bad. i will agree that we'll likely never see it play as nice as it did the first season it was open. but i still think it's one of the best in the state. green fees are reasonable. as are the cocktails. and you got the haufbrau right there so not much more a guy can want.

heading there in a week or so and now am paranoid i'm gonna get smashed with all this wind you guys are talking about! :o

Like most of the Montana weather drama (especially on this board) the wind at Old Works is a little exaggerated. I have an office in Anaconda, and have played there three times in the last month. One time was a little windy, but not bad. Morning tee-time is best.
 
I had my state golf tournament at Old Works a few years back. The first day was the worst day of golf I've ever experienced. Sideways blowing snow. Once you made it on the green you would run up and mark your ball. If you didn't there was a good chance that the wind would blow the ball right off the green. The second day was 60 and sunny.

I'm a huge fan of Whitefish. Well pretty much any course in the Flathead Valley.

There are some private ones around the state that are great if you happen to know somebody. I played Black Bull outside of Bozeman the other day. Very nice course.
 
If I waited for the wind to stop blowing I would never golf at all, or fish, or camp. Just saying.
 
You guys ever played up in Shelby? Now THAT is some wind! I don't know what club to hit when the wind isn't blowing. LOL. My favorite course I have played in the state hands down is Whitefish north. Hope the ASU fan enjoys Montana and everything that our beautiful state has to offer

how is marias playing these days? i played there last year and thought it was still great although not as taken care of as it once was. some fun holes on that course.
 
It hasn't been mentioned yet but I'm partial to the Double Arrow in Seeley Lake. 45 minute drive. Great views as well, and the front and back play completely different. The back in more open while the front has some pretty tight fairways through a lot of lodgepole. Come the end of August it should be playing great.

I haven't played it this year (moved back to the zoo) but I have heard it is in great shape. I worked there the last 5 years and you are right, last year was pretty rough. The new management company that has taken over is cutting a lot of corners cost-wise which you can tell. It is too bad because it is such a great course.

I agree with Allezchat too about Double Arrow. It is a fun, fun, golf course.

ya that is too bad. i mean, it was still a great time last year and overall the course is still better than most in the state. but i remember playing it in the 90's and it was incredible. i love the layout though. we played a few holes from the tips simply because they made for fantastic holes. i'm a 14 so not exactly a tips player but some were just too fun to pass up.
 
When did you play last year? The greens didn't recover until the end of August, which sucked because who wants to play golf during football season? My favorite hole from the tips is 17, it is a very difficult tee shot but if you pull it off you have an iron into the par 5 green.
 
Shelby probably died out because of Tom Russell. He tried to kill MCC a few years ago and thank god we god rid of his lazy butt.

Nope, Shelby died out because he left. He got ran out of the country club because of something that was out of his control.
