Throughout the time that Hauck was gone, I reminisced that many of the '03-'09 teams just found ways to win games. Many of those games were not pretty, but somehow or another they just continued to find a way to win.
As I look back on 3 of our losses (W Ill, Port St, and UC Davis), I am stunned that we lead all of them in the 4th quarter. Whether it was costly turnovers, poor special teams play, or not converting short yardage, we just keep finding ways to lose games. I am also disappointed that not only have we let 3 leads slip away, we have not had a win when we were trailing in the 4th quarter.
I coach myself and have thought often about how when you are on a losing streak it feels like you'll never win again and when you are winning it feels like you couldn't imagine ever losing again. That's kind of where I see this team and this program currently. They are in these games, but the consistent culture of winning that was there before is just currently absent.
I don't believe there is a quick fix. It boils down to buying into the system, paying attention to every detail, and refining your craft to the point that when it matters you start making that play and things turn around.
This team is not as far as some would care to imagine. It is raw in many aspects: secondary, O line, D line (hasn't had a consistent pass rush all year), personnel for the desired system, etc. But, despite all of this, they are in the games.
I will be interested to see how the team progresses in this manner throughout the last three games, which can then begin to set the tone for future years.
