Can't Find Ways to Win

Throughout the time that Hauck was gone, I reminisced that many of the '03-'09 teams just found ways to win games. Many of those games were not pretty, but somehow or another they just continued to find a way to win.

As I look back on 3 of our losses (W Ill, Port St, and UC Davis), I am stunned that we lead all of them in the 4th quarter. Whether it was costly turnovers, poor special teams play, or not converting short yardage, we just keep finding ways to lose games. I am also disappointed that not only have we let 3 leads slip away, we have not had a win when we were trailing in the 4th quarter.

I coach myself and have thought often about how when you are on a losing streak it feels like you'll never win again and when you are winning it feels like you couldn't imagine ever losing again. That's kind of where I see this team and this program currently. They are in these games, but the consistent culture of winning that was there before is just currently absent.

I don't believe there is a quick fix. It boils down to buying into the system, paying attention to every detail, and refining your craft to the point that when it matters you start making that play and things turn around.

This team is not as far as some would care to imagine. It is raw in many aspects: secondary, O line, D line (hasn't had a consistent pass rush all year), personnel for the desired system, etc. But, despite all of this, they are in the games.

I will be interested to see how the team progresses in this manner throughout the last three games, which can then begin to set the tone for future years.

fortunately the last 3 games are against teams that have a combined record to date of 8-16 and SUS is 1-7 and got beat last week by a 2-7 Northern Colo team. That should get our confidence up and allow us to get our confidence up and work on some good trick plays. Then onward to to the most likely 3-6 (can't imagine they beat UND)spuds pickers who again should provide us with more confidence so we head in to the Griz cat week with swagger. By then cats should be 5-5 but could be 4-6. I see us going into the off season on a high note.

Better hope so. We just chased a lot of lines in the record books:

* Worst loss in Wa/Griz HISTORY
* First 3 game losing streak since 1992
* Most consecutive points given up in 30 years
* Most points given up in one quarter in forever

I guarantee you, SUU and Idaho are both licking their chops to play us. They view US as their road to redemption.

Agreed. I am feeling maximum swagger. While we may not like the wins and losses this season, I do like the trajectory. And the swagger.

I can’t think of one reason why you guys shouldn’t feel the swagger. And yes, the cats will definitely be 4-6 when we play and the griz will likely win running away to end your season on a high note. And they’ll do it with swagger!

Just in time to get our berth to the TOILET Bowl. TOILET Bowl.
