Can anyone actually show that Bob Stitt is on the hot seat this season?

I don't think he's considered a lame duck anywhere but eGriz, because we're so much smarter than everyone else.

Actually to the casual observer a coach with a winning record looks ok, so probably not causing much angst out there.

If he's a coach coaching in the last year of a 3-year contract without guarantee of returning he is, by definition, a lame duck coach. As a recruit (or a recruit's parents) that would certainly impact my decision.

I get what you're saying, I just don't know if that's the perception out there in general.

Well it's the reason most universities don't allow coaches to GET to the last year of their contract...and it's something the other schools would certainly use against him/the U.

They could definitely point at the 6-5 mark and imply we're slipping but they can't really say what his job situation will be down the road, the parents on the other hand should be more tuned in and could steer a kid away from us if they think he is on the way out.

Well IMHO the parents don't need to "think" it...the U is implying it by NOT extending him. Not sure at what point during the season they'd pull the trigger on an extension, but if it's going to happen I can't imagine waiting until the very end. Just has put everyone in a very difficult position. He hasn't performed as advertised, affecting his ability to get an extension, which affects his ability to recruit, which can affect onfield performance, which in turn affects his ability to get an extension! A vicious circle he's gotten himself into....

It's not all bad, if he would have signed a big extension when they were 5-1 and rolling last year we'd really be pissed now after the collapse, at least now we'll get to see what he's made of when the chips are down with "his guys" and if it doesn't work out we won't have a gazillion dollar buyout to consider.

He produces or is likely gone at no cost...not the worst scenario when you think about it.

Stitt has to be on a hot seat. I could see if he had less than a 7-4 season he is gone. Is it fair maybe not. But like I said in another post UM has a 14 million dollar Champion Center opening this fall and the last thing UM wants is to end this season with a less than stellar record. Why would Kent want to give Stitt a contract extension for the next year or two to have have provide similar results with this shiny new gem in the Champion Center. The building is meant to be a recruiting tool and the last thing UM can afford is to have it open with a coach not able to pull a team together to produce.
If Stitt can Coach and produce better than a 7-4 season including beating MSU and get at least into the playoffs he deserves another year or two. Maybe longer if he can make a deep playoff run.
If he is less than 7-4 and looses to MSU again this year he needs to go. My vote then get Bobby H back as head coach to get things turned around again and maybe just maybe dominant the BSC again.

I know some of you are calling me an idiot, but here's the thing. Message boards are often wrong, very wrong, and tend to turn into echo chambers where rumors, inferences, and assumptions are treated like fact because theyve been repeated so many times.

I was just wondering if there's anyone else outside the eGriz community who has also come out and said that Stitt is on the hot seat.

The threshold is 7-4. Stitt knows it. Not a rumor, not an inference, not an assumption.

You keep saying it, but you have no proof. He can go 6-5, and as long as the team is improving at end of year he will be back. See how I can say it, but have no proof.

It's all for moot anyway, this team is going to go 9-2, and win 1 or 2 games in the playoffs, and Stitt will be our coach for the next ten years. :)

I could tell you who I've talked with (a person VERY in the know), but I won't. Let's just say 6-5 ain't gonna cut it.
Was it Growler

What is not being reported is clear and convincing proof that Bob Stitt is sitting on that proverbial hot seat and that his job is anything but secure. Had an extension been granted already it would be widely reported and posters on this board would be debating a completely different question. The fact that no extension has been reported is dispositive proof that Haslam has some doubt about Coach Stitt going forward.

As for any specific win total for this coming year, one has to view that in context of the season as a whole. If the Griz beat Washington but lose again to a Cat team that is well below .500 again and finish 7-4, will that be enough? How about beating both Washington and the Cat's but finishing 6-5 and once again missing the playoffs? I don't know the answer. I do know that this 2017 Griz team has to show improvement in all aspects of the game for any extension to be forthcoming.

I'm just glad that there are such great advocates and promoters of the team on here...

Message to recruits: Many of the posters on here are over the hill cranky old men who like to pretend that they are more important than they really are...

At some point all dynasties get sloppy and complacent. We will still produce good to stellar teams but really doubt our griz will dominate as we did for so long.

Per Stitt, I don't believe his offense can sustain a whole season. His "David copper field" scheme has short shelf life. I think he will be 3 and out at seasons end.

Post Stitt, more growing pains as we start all over again.

Sloppy and complacent - like Alabama? Michigan? Notre Dame? USC? Sounds like the ebb and flow of any program. Let's keep things in perspective people. Complacency started long before Bob Stitt and it did not occur on the field if you get my drift. He inherited a turd. Yep, you heard me right. A rotten turd with NCAA sanctions. Clean up on aisle five. I hope to hell the season goes well for the kids. They are the ones busting their asses. Thw recruiting of this staff is exceptional. The rest of you so called fans can pound sand. I don't think you give two hoots about the kids, the coaches or the program. You are to selfish.

Five quarterbacks are lost for the season, along with the top four running backs. The Griz go 6-5. Does Stitt get an extension? (The strength and conditioning coach doesn't.)

Three years each with 5 losses is a trend and is not what the major donors and boosters are buying. They are not shy in communicating to Haslam.

You saw the last 5 games differently it appears. There were not a lot of kids "busting their asses."

I'm not sure how much the lack of an extension negatively impacts recruiting. After all multiyear contracts are relatively new at UM; we used to give HC's one year contracts and we had a dominant program with a lame duck HC every year.

Yeah, didn't Hauck do single-year contracts from 2007-2009? We didn't seem to suffer recruiting then.

It was a BOR thing that only allowed 1 years.

This is what pisses me off. Our fan base used to be "fanatical." Hell - we criticized Bobby when he was leading the team to National Championship Games. Losses to the cats were felt deep and wide. Now, there are some who are so complacent they are literally satisfied with "a winning record." They say things like, "it's not really that bad." "As long as the team is improving" is a new mantra.

We should expect more than Stitt is delivering...I hope he leads the team to blow the doors off this thing...this year. I'll cheer fanatically if he does and earns an extension. But, I won't settle.

Hmmm....2007-2009...you mean the kids who became starters/contributors in....wait for it....2010-2012??? The beginning of our slide into mediocrity? Newsflash, the kids who took us to back-to-back NC games in '08 and '09 weren't recruited in 2007, 08 or 09. Those kids suffered and struggled under Pflu & Delaney. Now tell me our recruiting didn't suffer.

As evidenced by what, 90? Not trying to start a pissing match but does anyone have tangible proof? Did they witness a conversation or see this in a news story or from an official release by Kent, UM or Coach Stitt?
7-4 is the threshold. This came straight to me from the proverbial high-placed member of the upper echelons of the UM Athletic Department. It will not be reported in the media because UM would never go on record and say this. But Coach Stitt has been told this. Ask yourself this, if Stitt wasn't on the hot seat then why hasn't his contract been extended by even one year. Now there is always a bit of gray area. What if the Griz went 6-5, and somehow still made the playoffs. Then I'm guessing he stays. I don't have an axe to grind here. I like Coach Stitt. I hope, and believe, this year's team will exceed expectations and take us all on a fun and wild ride. I've said many times here before that I believe the Griz are on the front end of a great run and the new Academic Center, the soon-to-be-opened Champion's Center, and yes, even Coach Stitt, are all part of the reason for my optimism. The question was asked if Stitt is on the hot seat and the answer is YES.
