Cam Miller - Tommy Mellot PreSeason Play

I don't know if he would need 3 years. Colt Anderson spent almost two years on Vikings practice squad. Many players get released and resigned to practice squads within a season. Many hang around with multiple teams for a few years until they get their shot. Tommy really had only a few months to start working as a returner and receiver. I think both him and Junior will see the field during a regular season game within the next two years. Raiders will be better but are in such a tough division that they might not be in a position to qualify for playoffs last couple weeks of season. That is often when they rest veterans that are beat up and give younger guys looks. Then with an entire off season he could make huge leaps. That or he becomes QB for Dave Dickenson.
I agree but I am baffled Tommy did not get put on the practice squad. You use a draft pick on him knowing that you are going to make him switch positions. He gets limited reps in all 3 pre-season games and then say you can't be patient with him. Makes no sense to me.

The statement from the Raiders was pretty clear, they have a lot of depth at receiver and that means they need to focus on other positions for the practice squad. It wasn't a knock on him or his ability, it was just a matter of numbers.
For those thinking CFL QB, again, he doesn't have an arm for the NFL, how do you think that will translate on a longer, wider field in Canada?
I would not be shocked to see him picked up by another team for their practice squad, but he has done well to get to where he is, and the odds were long for this to work in the first place.

A lot of what the Raiders do makes no sense. The organization has not been relevant in over 20 years.

But, it's really not all that surprising he didn't get added to the PS. Yes, they used a draft pick, but every year there are guys who get drafted who are bagging groceries by September first.

It was very clear the raiders didnt have confidence he could be an nfl WR. He got few practice reps and verrrrrry few game reps.

Look, I get he's from Montana. I get he's from butte. I too was rooting for him. But if he were a 6th round pick out of, say, Middle Tennessee, and he played QB in college but was shifting to WR in the nfl, and he showed little to nothing during the the preseason, would anyone on here be surprised he didn't make a PS? My hunch is no; you'd realize how tough that is and think, "yeah, that's a big hill to climb".

It is tough for all of them for sure. Here is Alex Bachman's background. He was one of 3 receivers that made Raiders practice squad.

I mean this in the nicest way possible, but the practice squad quite literally is for developmental prospects. Usually players who are good enough to be field ready make somebody’s 53. Just as an example from two players from that game, neither O’Connell or Okada were field ready as rookies, and yet they were on the practice squad. Dylan Cook was not field ready, yet remained on the practice squad. I’d be surprised if Mellott makes the 53, but he’s basically a guarantee on the practice squad as a drafted player.
you were wrong
