Cam Humphrey Doesn’t Lose

I agree that he doesn't screw up and put us in a place to lose. But I think the real question is: Is Cam good enough to put this team in a position to win? I'm not qualified to answer. All I know is that all of our wins so far have been because of the team as a whole. Not because of one standout leader. Of course, I'm okay with that. But I think this is the real question.
Why would we want wins dependent one standout leader. I think that is the real question.

I don't mean that. I love team wins. But we all know that we have had special players in the past that can take the team upon his back and pull out a victory. E.g., Mariani versus South Dakota State in 2009. And, I do prefer my QB to be one of those standout guys capable of pulling the team together, to make them rise above.

Nope he didn’t lose. He didn’t finish the game so you can’t blame him. I’d blame the most powerful collegiate Defense to ever set foot on the gridiron.

Our defense played great. Our lack of offense caught up with us. Your obsession with the Griz is noted though. EWU will likely thump the Bobcats and it won't come down to the last play.

Really knocking my socks off here. Just f###[#] incredible.

Dog on Cam all you want, but at least recognize that the kid plays with an insane amount of heart. He blows hot and cold, but he fights hard. No quit in the kid. In the end, he put the Griz in a position to win and payed the price for it. Grantland Rice may have been summing Cam Humphrey up when he said:

“ For when the One Great Scorer comes to mark against your name, He writes not that you won or lost, but how you played the game!”

That’s Cam. Kid leaves it all out on the field. One of the gutsiest players I’ve ever seen suit up for the Griz. Even if he doesn’t play another down, he still has earned his place in Griz history.

Your Defense gave up 540yds! That’s not playing great in most instances

Saw he left two picks on the field…that’s how he played the game. Playoff seeding doesn’t come down to heart. The 2021 national championship banner isn’t coming down to heart. He did everything he could and it wasn’t enough.

I know right. He played awesome. Unlucky that he was knocked out, while trailing, with 24 seconds left, after throwing 2 picks in the 4th quarter.

And yet they some how gave an underperforming offense a chance to win. Too bad the offense did zero with the great field position after the pick.

Jesus.

The quote references effort and not crumbling in the face of adversity. It means making the gutsy run when you could go out of bounds. It means getting up and making a play, even after throwing two picks. I’m not making the argument that Cam is the best choice for a qb, but I will say he f-ing put everything out on the line to win. Holy hell, the announcers were marveling at it.

Cut the kid some slack.

I don’t think I will.

Asking any QB to complete 30 of 35 passes is fricking ridiculous.
No shit.
I really don't understand the rampant criticism of Cam. I'd much rather have an average QB surrounded by a great team (in all 3 phases, which I think we have) than a Dave Dickenson type surrounded by a terrible team.

Does it have to be one or the other?

Edit: I don't think the criticism is necessarily "rampant" per se, but maybe I haven't been here on eGriz enough ... :thumb:

Pretty hard not to give up yards when the defense is on the field fucking constantly. We were good until late in the 3rd quarter. They did what they needed to. They just needed rest. They got burnt and to me it looked like we lost a couple key players. Our defense got exhausted and it was the offenses fault. Keep giving EWU the ball right back. Exactly why I was torn with the kick return, it was nice to have a score but, was bad for our defense. Even when did something good it bit us in the ass.

Watching the game last night, I think the Bobcats will give The Eagles a game and a good shot at winning. The Cats have a better offense than the Griz and it has gotten better each week, also a solid defense.

I think bobcats win that game. Offense is quite a bit better than UMs

You guys definitely have a better offense.. but, that's about it.

Held them to 18 points below their avg and gave our anemic offense multiple chances to win the game. Defense did all we needed to win.

The six-point margin can be traced to both of Cam’s underthrown INTs. The first one resulted in a lost scoring opportunity, at least a probable FG to tie the game. The second INT looked worse, a bad decision resulting in an EWU field goal putting them up by six. Still, Cam and Kris Brown nearly pulled it out.

The way the game played out is not surprising but we learned a few things. Barriere is a great QB but maybe the Griz D isn’t as good as many believed. Or perhaps having Gavin Robertson on the field is crucial to defensive success. The OL play isn’t anywhere close to dominant. Cam often wasn’t protected well on pass plays and execution on running plays seemed inconsistent. The absence of Knight/Ostmo plays into it, certainly, but the QBs and RBs need more help from the OL.

Nonetheless, if special teams yardage is considered (return yardage and Griz advantage on punting) in addition to offensive yardage, the Griz outgained EWU and the Griz had fewer penalty yards. EWU ran 18 more plays (throwing 16 more passes) but only had a slightly higher TOP. EWU’s passing offense turned the game into a track meet at times but that was known going in.

As someone else noted in another thread, the EWU block of the Griz FG attempt looked like a result of confusion in the blocking scheme (some on the right side of the line acted like the play was supposed to be a fake, leaving a gap that allowed EWU through to block the kick). Not sure if UM left points on the table there, but maybe.

I still believe Cam is a good QB, though obviously not in the same class as Barriere. Cam made some mistakes but also did some things well. It is not surprising that the game was close to the end. There are many things to like about this Griz team and I hope Cam will be able to play in a few weeks because the Griz will probably need him at some point.

If there is such a thing as a “good” loss, maybe this game was it. I still like UM’s chances for the rest of the season, and like them more if Cam can come back from injury.

I commented to the folks around us that the defense was really missing Robertson. Maybe not the difference in winning and losing, but a contributing factor, I think.
