cal poly's triple option

How does a defense defend this thing? Last year even with Tonga we struggled with the dive play. This year we are undersized up front on defense and heaven forbid if Kidder gets hurt. Do we go to a 3-4? I know Gamboa will be back but I still don't understand how this thing works and what defenses do to combat it. Up for discussion if anyone can shed some light on what to look for Saturday night cuz I have no idea.
:help:

This game scares the life out of me for three different reasons.

1. It is an offense that we don't see and cannot duplicate in practice so for the defense it is "on the job learning".

2. Cutback and chop blocking. All defensive players must keep "their head up and on a swivel" to keep from getting cut. Where there appears to be a gap someone is going to be blocking you from behind or the blind side. While it is not illegal IMO it should be banned and/or above the hips. Keep them away from the legs.

3. Injuries. This is directly related to the blocking involved above. I fear the loss of a lineman or linebacker because of this type of blocking. We are deep at linebacker but we cannot lose a defensive lineman. I don't want to see anyone hurt and will feel much better when this game is behind us.

All true stuff.

But let's not get into the mode that the 'Stangs can't be beat, just because they kicked ass on the Griz last year. They ended up 7-5 and did not make the playoffs (maybe they should have, but they didn't). In their last game, they beat mighty San Diego by 31 ... the Griz did it by 38, playing subs for the last third of the game.

And, as I said in another thread, if the Griz score early and often, CP gets totally out of their game and is crushed. Will it be a tough game? You betcha. But I'm thinking Griz by a TD or so (and it only takes +1).

And ... just for the record ... playing conference teams in "non-conference" games is still idiotic.

I agree with Griz1. This game presents a entire new and different set of challenges for our defense. The Griz went to a 44 defense a whole bunch in the second half versus NDSU with 4 down lineman and 4 linebackers and it certainly made a difference...maybe Ty will go that route with a few new wrinkles. I do have confidence in our defense and our coaching staff's ability to prepare and adjust in-game. We have plenty of video on Cal Poly and our scout team will do their best to replicate it in practice this week. And I have a feeling the defensive coaching staff there is feeling the same way about our offense. This game will be won or lost on defense.

4 words: effective but hate it

Each player does 1/11. Over-pursuit will kill you. Defense's goal is to hold the offense to 3 yards and a cloud of dust. Rarely will you completely stuff any play other than the dive and even that is tough. Always, always, always hit or touch the quarterback (legally of course). Some amount of contact each play will wear on him and ensure someone always has him. Last year everyone bit on the fakes and the QB scorched us. GOT TO TACKLE since it relies on a lot of 1:1 plays.

Good point about hitting the QB on every play. Punish him early and often.

this feeds off of over pursuit.......spread the field, stay at home don't over commit, let them come to you
then pound the play with team tackling.

I think the only defensive injury the Griz had last year was when Van Ackeren got concussed when tackling Cal Poly SB Kori Garcia. I do not recall a lot of Griz defensive injuries against Cal Poly since the Mustangs switched to the TO.

SloStang please note that I am not attributing injuries to Cal Poly per se but they happen a lot due to the triple option and blocking schemes.

From what friend in Slotown tell me, CP is loaded with good talent this year and a few of the locals think that they are better overall than NDSU....This could be the game that shows how good the Griz really are. Let's hope so, but last year, even after losing a string of starters in the pre season, Poly put on a display and if, ever, a team over achieved, it was them. This is going to be a great matchup.

In 1993 we lost to Delaware 49 to 48 in a playoff game. We could not stop their triple option. We had not been coached to stop it. After that game the Griz could stop the triple option for many years. The option must be turned inside. Air Force still uses the triple option. If that option gets to the side line you are in deep dudu. If everybody tries to tackle, their blockers will get the ball carrier to outside line. You have to take out their blockers. This option needs a very fast quarterback. Taking out their blockers, and sealing the outside is key. If we can do this, we force them to pass. Many times triple option teams do not have a great passer.
