Thanks BW! Team defense will win this game!

Just like last season.

Team defense put the Griz in a great position to win last season, even gave the Griz the lead late. Turnovers killed us in that game.

Also word back to me that we did convert that 4th and 1 but the replay wasn't available so the short spot was upheld.

Brint, I was taking a shot at the offense. D played well, but without some O it won't matter just like last season.

I agree wholeheartedly. I am sure the defense will do great, but if the offense doesn't return the favor, I'm thinking that their triple option will wear our defense down by the last quarter. 3 and outs will just NOT GET IT DONE !!!

We've gotta do better than 2.5 ypc running the ball like we did against UNI, and we have to put the Cal Poly secondary to the test. Formula: run the ball effectively to set up the pass. Old school, but effective. That being said, I haven't really seen any evidence that our offense can do that with John Nguyen as the feature back.

Defenses will continue to be content giving Nguyen 8 yards every third carry (after runs of -1 and 2) if it means they can give more attention to our receivers. Until we can punch 'em in the mouth with the running game, our offense will be one-dimensional, predictable and ineffective. I'm think we'll see something like Cal Poly 27, Montana 13; but of course I hope I'm wrong!

My only prediction in this game is that if the Griz average 35 a half like they did in the second half against Saint Francis they will most likely win! :D

thanks brint

to your point: Gas the Poly defense. Hurry up, quick passes, get them running all over. Keep the Grizzly offense on the field as much as possible. Try to separate.

with our check downs seemingly on every play the hurry up offense is not effective and with our play count from last game did not seem to gas the defense. watching eastern play this weekend they implemented the hurry up offense without the checks and was able to get the advantage at the line and with route execution. (better separation)

against UNI we had 65 plays for 206 yds vs their 82 for 351, TOP was 27 min MT vs 34 min UNI
thank you mr mcgee for your beautiful run back to contribute to our win as these stats do not imply win.
i know, stats don't equal a win........but with brints scouting report there are plenty of mention of stats to make his point, valid or not, they do still carry some relevancy.

if we play at this same pace on saturday we will need the stellar defensive effort you mentioned to execute your points of "don't be fooled by the big play" and to keep the pressure on them to have long yardage on 2nd and 3rd downs

i would really like to see a balance in game calling and execution on both sides of the ball by the griz. play with confidence, i know they (players and coaches) have it in them

go griz!

John Nguyen has nothing to do with the lack of effectiveness of the running game. Give him a line and it's all different. Amazing how many guys think they know more than the coaches about who the top runner is. It's like some pathetic herd thing.

I hope last year's loss is weighing heavy on this year's team. There is nothing like a little focused vengeance to motivate a team to victory. Show 'em who Montana is!

Offense 3rd down %: Montana 29% - Poly 52%
Defense 3rd down %: Montana 25% - Poly 42%

The only stats that matter (along with turnovers, which ALWAYS matter). If these numbers are anything close to the averages, we'll get run out of the building.

EverettGriz, I agree the first stat doesn't bode well but if the Defense 3rd down comes through, I think we are in very good shape for this game.

This might be the wrong thread for this, but does anyone remember those two failed QB sneaks in the UNI game? Holy hell that was frustrating, and for two reasons.

1. They are stronger than us up front. Didn't get it the first time, why would we the second?

2. Why are we doing it with our starting quarterback???? Why not put in Simis, who is bigger, stronger, has been under center, and is durable? I'm betting he would have converted.

Definitely a scary thought. I don't like the idea of our starting QB at the bottom of a big pile of 300+ guys and risking an injury that removes him from several games.

Exactly. Simis would be perfect in that situation. Honestly I wouldn't mind seeing Simis in at QB every once in a while as a change of pace QB, do some zone read and get him running the ball.

This!!

Love how Stitt in his press conference said the team came out flat last year and laid an egg against Cal Poly after a big win against NDSU the week before. Sounds like he does not think Cal Poly contributed to the lost and the Griz just beat themselves. The Griz are a blocked FG away fro being 1-4 against Cal Poly the last 5 games. The Griz have also lost their last two games in SLO and a missed chip shot FG in 2008 away from three straight losses in SLO. I expect another hard fought game. Can not wait.

Slo, I expect another hard fought game as well.

But it would be silly to argue that the Griz did NOT come out flat last year against CP. That may not be why they lost the game, but it's certainly a fair and honest statement.
