Cal Poly getting steamrolled - Big Sky overrated?

Like I said EWU most years and us in 2011. Managing some semi final appearances when you're the largest conference is under performing. Not to mention the drop off from #1 to #2 in each of those years has been dramatic

That's fair enough. I agree that the conference should have better representation/diversity in the playoffs for how large it has become (which is too large). We talk a lot about how great a conference the BSC was back in the early to mid 90's. Reno, Boise, Idaho...Montana, to a lesser extent EWU. As competitive as it was, only Boise and Montana won championships. Idaho and Reno never did anything in the playoffs. I guess MSU and ISU won one each in the 80's. I guess my point is this is all cyclical. The Big Sky has rarely, if ever, had more than one "Great" team.

As I mentioned in a previous post, the Big Sky needs Montana and MSU to get back to being consistently competitive playoff caliber teams. There are other teams out there that are going to have the occasional one-off years, but none that have demonstrated consistency outside of EWU, Montana, and to a lesser extent MSU. I don't include UND in this discussion because I believe they will be gone 2-3 years from now.

Unless Montana & state ag can figure out how to attract team speed, the BSC may never return more than one competitive team to the tournament. That was apparent in spades when the Griz played USHSU in the semi's low these many years ago.

This defense broke down when their lack of speed was exposed @ Fisty. Max protect and your guys can run away from ours, or tag along with receivers who can't seem to run away from your guys on defense. We may have some of that on offense with JLM and guys like Akem, Toure & Green joining the rotation. So how do they find defenders with willing to come to Missoula with the kind of speed it will take to be competitive in the tournament.

Big Sky has been garbage for an eternity. This year's no different

The playoff bubble teams have been garbage, but with the exception of 2015, Big Sky teams have made deep runs in the playoffs every year since I'm not sure when. I believe you hold this opinion only because Montana hasn't been up to par for the past several seasons. Saying that, a Montana resurgence would do a lot to boost the playoff credibility of the conference.

Also not sure what happened to Cal Poly. They seem to have a knack for completely falling apart towards the end of the season.

No. I'm confident in saying the Big Sky has been garbage since 2010, with EWU, and Montana in 2011, being the only exceptions. For being the largest conference, the playoff resume as a whole is weak as shit.

Hell, you can argue it was pretty garbage from 2005-2009 too.

You could argue that for every conference since 2011 because only 1 team has won the title. Besides Ill States run two years ago, the other teams in the MVC have been garbage as well...CAA had a nice run for a while, but they have only been back once since they lost to EWU in 2010...The southern has been non existent and Sam Houston has been the only team in the Southland to make some noise...because of NDSU, every conference looks like garbage the past 5 years...

UI won 4 BSC championships from 86-94, in the same time Boise only won 1, I hate the revisionist history that UI was crap and Boise was always good, it just wasn't that way back in the old BSC

I was talking National Championships, but forgot that BSU won theirs in 1980 and then lost when they made it back to the Chipper in the 90's. I'm tracking that UI owned BSU for most of their time in the Big Sky. Hell, I remember attending a game in the Kibbie Dome when it was "8 straight, Boise State."

My point was that despite how well UI did in the Big Sky, they never really did anything in the playoffs. Reno had decent success in the playoffs, but no championships. Boise State, limited success in the playoffs. And this was all with a much smaller field.

When Montana was dominant in the 90's and 2000's, EWU made a couple runs. The reverse is true now. I don't know if the Big Sky has ever really had more than one title contender in the same year.
