Cal Job Open

I have seen TDC mentioned as a candidate. That job would have to at least be given a 5-6 year guarantee. They have been a dumpster fire for awhile.

We do this every time the CAL job opens up. They've passed on him twice now and the third time I don't even think he expressed interest after they chose Wyking Jones over him. I bet he's not interested but I suppose you never know. I think the only job he would consider leaving UM for at this point is Washington, and we'll wait to see what they decide with Mike Hopkins.

If Cal calls, wouldn't you have to at least consider it? The money difference alone would be enticing. Tripling or quadrupling your pay is nothing to poo-poo.

Then who do we look to as our replacement?

I think is is true. He is probably 52 or 53. Mark Fox, the last Cal coach got 5 years at $8m+. Heading into 60 after banking $8m would be hard to pass up. Even something lower than that would have to be considered.

Unfortunately for Travis, his market isn't as high as pre Covid. I'd be surprised if he's a serious pac 12 contender. I do wish him the best. Travis is terrific.

As for replacement, I want to find out what Cobb can do.

If Trav moves on, I think it's time for a fresh start. I like Cobb, but I think we need to bring in a fresh face with new ideas. Plenty of PAC 12 assistants out there that would do well!

Washington announced that Mike Hopkins will return for another season. They would’ve had to pay him $6.3 million over 2 years to buy him out. Probably figured if they’re mediocre for 1 more year it’s not the end of the world and they can buy him out for much less next year!

Looks like Cal will be the only open job in the PAC12 as Stanford committed to bringing Jerrod Hasse back for another season as well, and there’s currently nothing open in the Mountain West! Might be a pretty mild coaching carousel out west this year!

Cobb? I'd hope a possible search would go much deeper than that.

I think Travis would be terrific for Cal. He knows Cal and the Pac-12 and knows how to recruit for it. He would be in the heart of great basketball recruiting territory. He's Black. He's energetic. He knows how to recruit and evaluate good kids and gets them to graduate. I assume Cal demands that.
