I am always pleasantly surprised when I see glimpses of greatness from new players. On the men's side, that means Timmy Falls and Karl Nichlas.

On the girl's side I thought it would be Sophia Stiles but I didn't expect to be so impressed with Caitlin Lonergan. She was the Gatorade POY her senior year at Bozeman High but chose to play volleyball at MSU. She quit after the first semester and transferred to UM where she had to sit out a year to play hoops.

This was her first game and she played sparingly but made a strong impression. She is 6-2 and physical. Plus, it appears that she can really really really jump. Last time I looked she had 5 rebounds and 5 points in a short time. For someone who hasn't been in a game for two years, she looked very promising. She will add a dimension that we have been missing since Alycia Sims went down. She might just be a dominating post player.

Who is Jessica Sims? Do you mean Alycia (Sims) Harris? I am assuming you do!

I was impressed with her play tonight too. Her Gatorade POY award was for volleyball, not basketball, but she showed a lot of natural ability tonight. I hope for more to come.

Converting volleyball players seems to be a successful formula!

Noticed over on gogriz.com that Lonergan is listed as a sophomore instead of as a redshirt freshman as earlier. I wonder if that's because she played volleyball for a near season for another school. Jace Henderson did a near full season of volleyball and acquired four years of eligibility for basketball when she changed sports. Having Lonergan as a R-Fr this year would help out more so than considering her as a sophomore.

The way I understand it is that an athlete has 5 years to play 4. In Jace's case she didn't transfer so she didn't lose a year. She merely switched sports. For Lonergan she attended MSU and played one year, sat out a partial year at MSU and then transferred to the University of Montana and she had to sit out a year and now has 3 to go which would make her a redshirt sophomore.
