Yep. Three ways a team can get the ball so they can go on offense: turnover, force a punt, or receive a kickoff. (They get one -- usually :) -- "freebie" with the start or half-time kickoff.)
Edit: Technically, a missed FG does not count as a turnover, and a "turnover on downs" rarely shows up in the stats, so their are a couple other ways you can get the ball back. (Does not change my point, or the numbers.)

Takes a little digging because ESPN does not keep the number quite the way I wanted to make the comparison. In three games, EWU has forced (received) 9 punts and 24 kickoffs after the other team has scored (FG or TD). They themselves have punted 13 times and kicked off 21 times after scoring.

EWU's best defensive effort was definitely against NIU: They forced 6 punts and received 6 kickoffs after NIU had scored. Without that game, EWU has "forced" just 3 punts, while receiving 17 kickoffs after the other team had scored. Seems their strategy sure is to let the other team score so they can get back on offense.

In case you're wondering, I went through the numbers twice just to be sure -- could still be off 1 or 2 either way, but that's sorta academic. The numbers really are amazing in a puke kinda way.

Hmmm... I guess in a round about way you're trying to discredit Kupp? Really? The guy has dominated the Griz since he stepped foot on that campus...I'm sorry but that's just unsportsmanlike. Just enjoy the guy's greatness....

Agreed. Once in a generation player....especially in the BSC.

Not at all, just referring jokingly to the EWU/MSU game. I know Kupp's good!

Keep in mind, as some have alluded to, we did not play a Ft Lewis State, (or an EWU or MSU) to pad those offense stats. Also, the sample size is small so I'd like to see AZ do an update in maybe three or four more weeks. I suspect we will have improved some of those numbers. How is rushing defense? Total defense?

I agree that the numbers should improve after the next three games, particularly against WSU and UC Davis. That new FCS site has the Griz D ranked as follows:

Total Yards 1,183 Rank #76
Rushing Yards 637 Rank #96
Passing Yards 536 Rank #52
Points Per Game 28.7 Rank #62
Yards Per a Game 354.3 Rank #59
Touchdowns 11 Rank #75
FIeld Goals 3 Rank #73

The big difference between last year's D and this year's D is in scoring D and turnovers. The Red Zone D last year was good and the D created turnovers. Also, JJ and the O rarely turned the ball over last year which helped. A total different story this season so far.....

I hope you were referring to the comment by UMcheeer2000. ;)

My numbers only apply to how many times the EWU (non)defense gets the ball back so Kupp can do his thing. And we all know what he does with it -- the guy is just phenomenal! :thumb:

BTW: CBS Sports has Kupp ranked #21 among all WR draft prospects (total of 410), as of right now. I've seen other lists that rate him as high as #11. So far as any of these guys know (and who knows what their credentials are), Kupp has no plans to declare for the draft after this season.

I think kupp will declare. Hes going to be ranked way up after this full year. You dont think he sees the risk of playing next year too? Hes a stud! He deserves to make the nfl, plus WR class this year is going to be much smaller and less talented than next. His chance of getting picked higher and more $$ is much greater this year. That being said...if he stays next year....he may just break national records

Back to our team and it's numbers and problems that all Griz fans are talking about.

It is fun for some to bring numbers and stats. into the fray and make silly statements that are absolute in nature but in truth are far from reality. Some fans need to take a break and relax and watch the games and as the season moves along new problems and numbers will loom out and we can visit about it over and over again.

Relax and enjoy the moment. Our team is damn good. Watch us play NAU and see some improvement here and there. A few unexpected players will shine and play very well. Mistakes will happen but will be far fewer than the previous game. Record the game so you can watch it to determine what went on. I love being a Griz and win lose or draw I am still a Griz!

Not sure how YOU measure this statement, but objectively, no we're not "damn good". We're not even "very good" or "good". Doesn't mean I dont' enjoy watching the games and looking for improvements, and win lose or draw I am still and always will be a Griz, but right now we're not good at all.

Hard to be objective not living behind maroon color glasses, and having narrative with those whom refuse to look beyond them...

Reality is sometimes cruel..... Go Griz,

WOW what an offense!! Crazy mad scientist coach really can destroy teams at this level.....NOT !!!

Arizona.....as a team, we had to be pretty good to beat North Dakota State. Regarding certain positions, we aren't very good.

tailbone: When will the offense "get it"...how freaking long are you going to use that excuse...they had ALL SPRING BALL...ALL FALL CAMP and now 3 games!! Remember Cole....he sure got it done a lot faster...even Billy Cockhill was able to get us above 103rd in the nation (and he did not have as many returning starters either) and he didn't even have any time under a previous program using that offense. Face facts, if idiots like me can predict with a great deal of accuracy the play called, how do you think paid professional staffs can do? Maybe this will work...lets switch everyone around again...Dylan you are now center, Decker how about TE ....after all the line position switching has been such a great sucess so far...and then we could make the routes so confusing that no one can figure out what is going on (not just Segars). Instead of having three options to choose from (hoping the QB chosees the same) maybe we can have 5 oor 6. Bottom line is they better start winning..lose to Idaho or Polyand you need to run the table in the BSC (and how many times is the BSC champion been undefeated? Not very many.) Just think quarterfinals 2002, return about 18 starters (plus get all-american candidates come back from injury)and you don't even make the play-offs? Now that is one for the record books....

Regarding the saying "Lies, damned lies, and statistics" Wikipedia describes it as "the persuasive power of numbers, particularly the use of statistics to bolster weak arguments. It is also sometimes colloquially used to doubt statistics used to prove an opponent's point." Three games. Comparing teams playing unlike teams. I'm not worried yet. If those numbers and comparisons to the competition hold in a few more weeks I'll be worried.

Agreed. And we haven't played as a complete team since.

I admit that I did not read a single post in this thread...but that was based on the assumption this is a weather related thread...."By The Numbers" must be a discussion about temperatures or snow depth....am I right?

Yes, you're correct. Go read Raider's "Thoughts about NAU" thread....that's a great read...lots of detailed analysis and game breakdown. :thumb:
